Is Snape good or evil?
I personally think he is evil. Lord Voldemort is the second greatest wizard in the world behind Dumbledore, and a great at legimency. I just don't see how Snape could fool Voldemort for so long. Plus, there was that look of hatred on his face as he killed Dumbledore. Snape also spends way too much time with Malfoy. Who does Narcissa turn to for help? Snape. No one is that good of an actor.

Okay, this is probably gonna sound really crazy, but bear with me, please. ;D I agree what you said about not seeing how Snape could fool Voldemort for so long. I know that Dumbledore would be capable of coming up with a plan like that, but it would take someone exceptionally powerful to follow through. Would Snape be able to do that? I don't know why, but I can see Snape being able to fool Dumbledore more than I can him being able to fool Voldemort. That being said, do I think JK will allow Snape to be truly evil? Eh, probably not.. The "plan" theory about Snape just doing it all on Dumbledore's orders seems very logical for JK's purpose. If he's not evil, he'll probably be able to be "redeemed," because she says all her major characters, with the exception of maybe Voldemort, are "redeemable." I guess a part of me doesn't want to believe that Dumbledore had to resort to making plans for someone to kill him.

I agree with what has been said so far and can't believe Dumbledore would make up such a plan, too. My opinion on Snape was settled long before HBP, though. I've always hated him for the way he treats the students. You have to be strict and it's better to be strict at the very beginning before they go too far. McGonagall is strict but you can see she cares about the students. Snape simply hates them. He never shows any real interest in them. Maybe the Slytherins are an exception but that's not normal either and I don't really think he likes them. So from a teacher's point of view he is a lost case.

When I saw this, I just had to throw my two cents in: I do not believe Snape is evil. There, I've said it. I do agree with the theory that he was just following orders by Dumbledore. The pleading part at the end of HBP really sealed it -- it was like he was beggin Snape to kill him even though he didn't want to. Do I think that he will go back to Voldemort? Absoloutely not. He's nice and good. Well, in a general sense.

I say he's good, but that's my personal opinion.... Dumbledore is too powerful to actually be taken down by Snape...

I wouldn't mind the idea of Snape as evil(thing for bad boys, sorry); however, I don't believe he is evil.
Snape is trained in Occlumency, he could have fooled Volemort every time they were together.
Year One, Snape didn't have to save Harry's life. Someone who is truely evil don't pay attention to old debts, so he wouldn't have cared that James once helped him.
Year Five, he went to check on Sirius after Potter gave him that warning about the Depart of Mysteries. Not telling the Order would have allowed the Death Eaters to suceed to gaining the prochey. Snape ruined that chance for them.
And though he hasn't helped Potter, he does care about some students. Take Draco in HBP; he took the vow, and there was no way he had to do that. Snape could have refused and said that it would be a betrayal to the Dark Lord to take on a mission assigned to another. He had no way of knowing the Narcissa would add that last part about killing Albus if Draco couldn't(does every vow require 3 parts?)
Even after killing Albus, Snape refuses to let any harm come to Harry, and never joins the Death Eater's fight, just grabs Draco and goes. He is highly upset at being called a coward, which would be understandable if he had killed on Albus's orders.
Dumbledore would not plead with Snape to save his life, but he would plead with him to go through with the deed. Ron said that if Snape hadn't killed Albus then he would have died(and likely Draco too). Would Albus choose death over allowing Snape/Draco to die so he could live? YES!
I'm not saying he is Mr. Goody-Goody, far from it. He is out for himself, whatever helps him survive. But I do believe that he has better chances with Dumbledore than Voldemort.

A month left until we find out for sure!
I read a post somewhere that basically stated, even if he was a spy for the good, that should not have given him a free pass on his behavior (insults students, threatens to poison their pets, insulting Sirius when he knew Sirius had to stay at Grimmauld place, etc) . I must say I have to agree , even though I think he is evil. So even if he is good, I still don't like the jerk.

"Good" is too strong a word...LOL! But I don't think he's evil. Dumbledore would NOT plead for his life. He must have been beggging Snape to do something else, such as "please kill me" or "please follow the plan" or "please look after Draco." But he would not beg for his life, for he did see death as the "next great adventure" according to PS/SS. I think it's important that Snape not be evil. It conveys an important less, IMO: A person can be thoroughly unpleasant, and not necessarily be evil.

Eitheir he isn't or he's neutral. I can't decide. But if Snape was lying, Dumbledore would have been able to tell easily. Same with Voldemort.

I don't care what he does or how it gets explained away, Snape killed Dumbledore. For me, it's black and white. Snape kills Dumbledore, we kill Snape. And everyone lives happily ever after except Min. The end

.. lol <3 anybody else think that snape has a redemptive pattern to his personality? I, the eternal blaring optimist that I am, believe he is innocent. That, and I really don't see Dumbledore begging Snape for his life. The "please" could have meant anything. "Please, you are the last hope" I used to have the strangest idea that Draco was actually GOOD, even though his father was evil, and he wanted to turn to the good side or whatever but couldn't. So Dumbledore allowed him into the plan, or something. hmmm.. I'm such an optimist it's kind of sad actually. <3

Snape isn't evil. Well maybe a little nasty when it comes to his students but not evil in the sense that he would have betrayed Dumbledore and killed him in cold blood.
I am a stern believer in the theory that Dumbledore was pleading with Snape to kill him rather than spare his life. If Albus had been pleading for his life and scared of death wouldn't he have become a ghost like Nearly Headless Nick or Moaning Myrtle? No, I believe he was fully prepared to die and sacrifice himself for the greater good. And that's why he was pleading with Snape.
Another point: I think if Snape had wanted to kill Dumbledore the look on his face would not have been one of hate and revulsion. I think if he really were the evil git some people see in him he would have simply smirked!
Well, I guess we'll all see come July 21st. And I wouldn't know what would disappoint me more: if ADMM was not confirmed or if Snape somehow mysteriously turned out to be evil.

Snape isn't evil. As beMMADfabulous said at the top, JK said that all characters (except Voldie) would appear redeemable. But then again, why did she word it as "appear redeemable".

I'm not bragging when I say that I knew what was going to happen in the 6th book before I even read it. I knew that Dumbledore wouldn't die and most likely Snape would kill him. Now it said that Albus trusted Snape b/c of him confessing about telling the Dark Lord the proph. and he felt guilty, now I don't think we should ask if Snape could fool Albus or Voldemort b/c personally I think he could fool both and the only weakness he has is when it comes to Harry. His anger distracts him and Harry entered his mind remember?-book 5- so anyway, I believe that Snape doesn't quite believe which side he is on either, he just trying to survive! but you can tell that Snape does care for Dumbledore, it simple though...Dumble experienced two major curses (hand and dilusional) lets face it...he wouldn't have survived that. He knew he didn't have much time left and the only way to ensure that everyone he cared about lived, he would give up his own life. The unbreakable bond is just that...unbreakable and so Snape knew Albus was dying and saved his godson, Draco, by just putting him out of his misery. Sorry for writing so much but there was a lot to say on the subject. -Haley(MidNightWarrior)

Who does Narcissa turn to for help? Snape. No one is that good of an actor. I don't know...I think an evil Snape would be way, way too simple. He's JKR's most complex character. I think he's trying to be on about 5 trillion different sides at once. Also, I don't know if anyone noticed this in the movie of Book 4, but Dumbledore (or someone) says Harry will have to "make a choice between what is right and what is easy". I think this also applies to Snape--nothing in life is ever simple, especially for him, and he's just trying to get through each day by doing the right thing. If that means playing multiple roles to the bitter end, then so be it.
