Considering I haven't posted anything in a long time, I wrote this little ficlet to try and nudge my muse out of her coma.
Inspiration for this one comes from my story, Light the Bealltuinn Fires, which is on FF.net. It is not necessary to have read it. There's a line in it that sort of foreshadows this drabble.
28. Children
"Now, Alex, what I'm about to show you has to be our little secret. At least for now." Albus led his son into a secret tunnel behind a mirror in their study. "If your mother knew what I was doing, she'd probably have my head."
"I won't tell anyone, Father," said the boy, excitement evident in his voice.
They walked through a dark tunnel for several minutes before finally arriving at an iron door. Albus ran his wand down the middle and whispered something that Alex couldn't understand. With a loud groan, the door opened slowly to reveal a vault filled with boxes. Albus lit the torches on the walls and looked around with his hand stroking his beard.
"Now, where did I put it," he muttered. He started levitating boxes this way and that until something shiny caught his eye. "Ah, there it is." He waved his wand and a large sword still in its scabbard floated towards them.
"Wow," said Alex. "That's a really big sword! Is it a claymore?"
Albus plucked it out of the air and dusted it off. He held the handle out to Alex. "Probably the most famous of all swords."
Alex wrapped his hand around the handle and pulled. It was heavier than he thought and needed both hands in order to hoist it up. Although the scabbard was dulled and worn, the blade itself gleamed so brightly, it was as if the moon was trapped within the metal. It was engraved with ancient symbols and talismans, but one word along the middle stood out. "Excalibur!" cried Alex. "This is Excalibur?"
Albus smiled at his young son holding the legendary sword, feeling its power. "That it is, my boy. It's very old, but it still holds some of Merlin's power."
Alex felt a tingle of magic run down his arm. "How did you come to have it, Father?"
"Let's just say it's a family heirloom."
