So this took a little longer than expected. It's because of my AP exams. [*cries*] Anyway, I should note that this takes place quite a while before Diamond. It turned out more angsty than I intended, but it's not quite as bad as the last one. ^_^;;
"Minerva, can I have a word?"
"Oh, certainly, Severus."
A staff meeting had just finished, and Minerva was about to go to Albus, but she allowed Snape to lead her to a corner of the staff room.
"I wonder," he said quietly, "if I could entreat your assistance in a rather delicate manner."
"What is it?"
"As you know, I have applied for the post of Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher," his eyes glinted coldly, "many times."
"Yes, I am aware of that," Minerva said kindly. Snape had applied for the job -- and been rejected -- each of his five years of teaching.
"Well, I wanted to ask for your help."
"My help?" she frowned.
"If you could just put in a good word for me--"
"I don't understand."
"Dumbledore greatly respects your opinion," Snape explained. "And surely you have the upper hand as the woman."
Minerva's jaw dropped.
"What are you insinuating?" she demanded.
"But aren't you two together?" Snape was now just as puzzled as she was.
"You are very much mistaken. We are not."
"You must be joking!" Snape said incredulously.
"I can assure you, Professor Snape, I am not joking," she said coldly.
"But you two are so close," he reasoned. "You act like secret lovers."
"Lovers?" Minerva looked scandalised. She glanced across the room at Albus, who was deep in conversation with Professor Trelawny. After watching him for a moment, she turned back to Snape. "Albus and I most certainly are not lovers," she said gravely.
"I'm very sorry, Minerva," Snape turned bright red. "I just assumed--"
"It's alright, think nothing of it," Minerva muttered, slipping out of the staff room with one quick glance back at Albus.
