A/N:: It’s been far too long that I’ve written something. I hope you’ll take this as a peace offering in return. XD haha
This is set just before the second war with Voldemort.
FanFic 100 Challenge #:: 070- Storm
Albus Dumbledore stared out his office window, watching in silent thought as thick, darkened clouds swirled in the near distance. Slowly and methodically, he placed a long, slender hand upon the cold glass of the window as if this was the way he could physically reach out and feel the peril that he knew lay ahead.
“It’s coming, Minerva,” he spoke aloud, his face so close to the window now that his breath fogged the glass.
His tense words sent a shiver down Minerva’s spine as she watched him from across the room.
“Are you sure?” she asked, though she wasn’t quite sure why she had.
She hadn’t doubted Albus even for a moment. Rather, she felt she needed to find some words to say that might ease the fear that stood almost tangibly in the darkly lit room.
“It’s coming,” he repeated, “And it will be worse than last time. I’m sure of it.”
Minerva clenched her hands together tightly, her mouth opening slightly for a moment and then closing. Fear rose up within her—fear for the entire Wizarding World and, most of all, for Albus himself and the young boy that Voldemort had claimed as his equal.
“What does this mean, Albus… for us?”
Minerva felt selfish for considering her own desires in a time such as this, but she knew that simply ignoring a concern would never erase it completely. She watched Albus’s shoulders rise as he took a breath and then fall slowly as he exhaled.
“I cannot bear the thought of you getting hurt because of me,” he replied in a low voice.
“No,” Minerva said, placing a hand on his arm. “You can’t give up on us just because you fear something will happen to me.”
“I will always love you…”
“Then we can make it work,” Minerva urged, holding his arm in a tighter grip now.
Albus took Minerva’s hand in his own and stroked it tenderly with his thumb.
“I cannot bring myself to believe that I am worth the trouble,” he said with a weak smile.
Without a word, Minerva embraced him tightly and kissed his cheek.
“Are you sure you want this?” Albus asked.
“I’ve never been surer of anything,” she whispered.
It seemed cliché, she knew, but it was true. Without Albus, it would not seem worthwhile for the Wizarding World to be in another war; without him, she would have nothing left to fight for.
“What are you protecting me from, Albus?” Minerva asked him, touching his arm again lightly. “This war or you?”
Albus’s eyes met her own briefly before his gaze drifted to the floor. He knew that she was correct. Her hand moved gracefully to his cheek, and his eyes closed at the comforting warmth of her palm against his face.
“Why do you push me away?” Minerva asked.
It wasn’t a harsh question, and Albus knew it; she was only working to break the barrier between them.
“I just want you to be happy. Perhaps I just love you too much,” he replied with a chuckle.
Minerva smiled.
“Don’t worry about me,” she whispered. “As long as I have you, I will always be happy.”
“It’s not going to be easy,” Albus said, regaining a serious tone.
“I never expected it to be.”
“It’s going to take a lot of effort.”
“I’m certainly willing to try.”
“Then so am I,” he replied, kissing the back of her hand.
Minerva pulled him close to her as she fought back tears. Albus kissed her softly and spoke soothingly to her.
“You give me hope, Minerva, as you always have, and even when I feel that I can’t go on, you give me something worth fighting for.”
THE END
A/N:: Yeah, yeah. Bad ending, I know..
