A Day in the Life of a Cat
Minerva trudged wearily up the path to the school. It had been a day. She had spent the entire day sitting on a cold stone wall waiting for Albus, and, when he had finally arrived, he had confirmed all of her worst fears; Lilly and James were dead and Harry was off to live with those horrid muggles with that pudgy, candy-obsessed brat of theirs.
Voldemort was gone, at least in hiding, but Minerva couldn’t bring herself to celebrate. Freedom, as it was, had come at a high price, and she for one was not sure whether he was gone for good. It seemed too good to be true.
She sniffled a bit, pulled out a green tartan handkerchief and blew her nose into it. She just couldn’t believe that Lilly and James were gone. She could remember them as students. They were so young and so in love. Minerva furrowed her brow. It didn’t seem right that she and Albus should still be alive, when Lilly and James were dead. It wasn’t right for the young to die before the old.
Minerva’s thoughts turned to Albus as she rubbed her back and headed up the stairs to her bedroom. He’d never seen a cat sit so stiffly indeed. Sometimes she just didn’t know how she put up with him. They’d been together for years...too many to count, and yet sometimes she just couldn’t figure out why it worked...they were just so different, but then something like this would happen, and, as much as it annoyed her that he would disappear and never tell her where he was going, she had her means of finding him, and, when she did find him, even if she had to wait all day, it was always worth it to see those twinkling blue eyes of his, even if they only saw each other for a few brief minutes as they did tonight.
Minerva rubbed her shoulder. Seeing him had been the sole bright moment in a terrible day. She was so sore from sitting on that wall all day. The moment that she got to her room she planned to run a hot bath, and stay in the water until Albus came home. He had said that he would see her soon, so she assumed that he would come to her that night.
Minerva opened her door, and stood, a small smile breaking out on her face as she surveyed the room. There were blankets and pillows spread out on the floor in front of a roaring fire. Minerva smiled fully expecting Albus to appear carrying roses, or better yet massage oil, but then a small box on the coffee table caught her eye. She walked over to it and lifted the box gingerly. There was a note under it. She put the box down on the table, and picked up the note, frowning as she read:
My Dearest Kitten,
Since you spent all day in your animagus form, sitting on that wall, when you should have been at home, or out “letting your hair down,” I thought that you could use this. It’ll help you relax. Enjoy. I’ll see you soon.
Love,
Albus
Minerva smiled, wondering what on earth was in the box. She dropped the note carelessly and picked the box up. Minerva lifted the top of the box, and her eyes got wide, then she began to laugh. He really knew how to brighten her day. It was catnip. It was going to be a good night.
