A/N:: So, yeah... This story isn't the greatest. lol What can I say? I tried. It's hard to keep up in your writing with a full school schedule and everything else. You all know how that goes.
Oh, this is inspired by the song of the same name by the Judds. If you haven't heard it, I suggest listening to it. Tis beautiful, IMO. ;D
Minerva Mcgonagall stood apprehensively at the Headmaster's doorway. It was foolish, she knew, for a woman with her strong sense of dignity to allow such infantile emotions as an infatuation with Albus Dumbledore to control her life, but never before had anyone managed to make her feel the way he did. Minerva sighed and quietly turned the door handle.
The light of the room came from several candles which cast tall, flickering shadows upon the stone walls. Albus sat miserably at his desk with his head in his hands. Minerva could not determine whether it was strength or weakness that kept her from running to hold him. She tiptoed in an effort to refrain from disturbing him in case he had been sleeping before kneeling down beside him.
Albus lifted his head and slowly turned to face her. It broke Minerva's heart to look into his tear-glazed eyes. She cupped a hand over his cheek and wiped away the moisture from his eyes with her thumb.
"Lily and James Potter are dead," he said in a low, pained voice. "They have been murdered by Voldemort."
Minerva felt something sink inside of her. She shut her eyes tightly to keep from crying. No, this could not be true. Minerva and Albus had visited them and their young son Harry just last week. They could not be dead. She shook her head slightly, eyes still closed, as he took her hand in his.
"The boy?"
"He survived. Lily was killed trying to save him."
The tears began falling freely from Minerva's eyes. Albus tightened the grip on her hand.
"I am arranging for Harry to be taken to live with his aunt and uncle," he went on.
"Muggles?"
Albus nodded solemnly.
"Isn't there any other way?"
"They are the only family he has left."
Minerva stood and, despite believing it to be against her better professional judgment, wrapped her arms around him.
"Am I making the correct decision?" he asked.
The sincerity and uneasiness in his voice caused Minerva to tremble. She paused before making a reply, though she did not doubt her response.
"Yes, Albus," she stated plainly. "You have my unconditional confidence."
Their noses were a mere few inches apart. Minerva could see the new twinkle of strength in Albus's eyes. Her mind shouted reminders that they were Headmaster and Deputy and nothing more, but her heart would not allow her to miss this opportunity- not again.
At long last, the two came together to bridge the connection between them- love, sealed with a kiss.
THE END
