Life Magazine has released its print and archival pictures to Google Images. So...
Go to Google Images
Type in, for example, Maggie Smith source:life in the search box
Out comes 3 pages of pics - candid, work, family
If you want the full size, click on the + sign
There are no watermarks
For other actors/persons just change the name as in Judi Dench source:life
The pics are not just those that appeared in the mag but those taken but never used.
I don't know about other writers but I can get inspired by old pics.
