Well, this isn't really a request, but more a statement, but still a bit of the request. The Bishop of the Catholic Churches in Central New York (where I live) have decided to close some of the churches in the area. There have already been many churches closed in the past two years since the beginning of this "era" - should I say. Sadly, our church has been chosen to be closed. We received a letter from the Bishop of Syracuse on November, 18, 2008 explaining the future of our church. The e-mail read :
I, myself have a strong connection to the church and the people within it. I have grown up within this parish and it is one of the closest bunch of people I have seen. When I arrived from India, I was baptized there; at age six, my father's funeral was held there; and two years later, I received my first holy communion. We share a priest with one other church and are saddened by this. Although you may all be wondering why I am telling you all this, I only ask, for the church of St. Andrew's the Apostle of Syracuse, New York; please, through the holiday seasons, will you remember us and hope for good end to this hard time within our church.

"The merger of St. Andrew the Apostle Church and the Church of St. Lucy will take place on Sunday, January 18, 2009."
So says Bishop Moynihan in a letter written last week and received today. In the letter, Jim was told that the Bishop's "appreciation of 'choosing life'" differed from Jim's "mantra," and that "the principles of equity and fairness must be observed."
Until then, ...one more time.
