kissofdeath: I get them from excessively trolling the internet and various photo databases. The pics from movies I get from screencapping the film. mercifulheavens: most of them are screencaps, but some of the ones from plays (like this picture from Hedda Gabler) are from the program.

Today's picture is from the 1981 Merchant-Ivory production of "Quartet", based on the Jean Rhys novel of the same name. It starred Maggie as Lois Heidler, Alan Bates as H.J. Heidler, and Isabelle Adjani as Marya Zelli.

I don't really like the bobbed hair cut on Maggie... but I'm sure she acted superbly in this movie.

Lots of haircuts look bitching on Maggie but I don't think the bob is one of them.

Today's picture is from the 1979 Broadway production of Tom Stoppard's play "Night and Day". Maggie played Ruth, the wife of a mining engineer. The play is set in the fictional African country Kambawe. And today, you also get a bonus fanfiction to read! Beware, it contains spoilers for the play. You can find it here: admmfics.proboards22.com/index.cgi?board=somewhat&action=display&thread=3971

Today's picture is from the 1981 movie "Clash of the Titans", starring Maggie as Thetis and Sir Laurence Olivier as Zeus. The screenplay of the movie was written by Maggie's second husband Beverley Cross.

Today's picture is from one of Maggie's first-ever performances. She appeared as Viola in Twelfth Night in 1952.

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone - I'm going to write a Thetis/Zeus fic! Today's picture is from the 1960 production of "Strip the Willow", written by Beverley Cross, Maggie's second husband. The character of Kathy Dawson (Maggie's character) was written specifically with Maggie in mind. Oddly enough, this production also starred Michael Blakemore, who would go on to direct Maggie in "Lettice and Lovage".

Oh! I love Maggie in Othello! I consider it one of her best performances! But then again I have never seen a show she was in that I didn't like. Lovely picture too!

Today's picture is from the 1969 Chichester production of William Wycherley's "The Country Wife". Maggie played Margery Pinchwife, a role now occupied by Fiona Glascott in the recent revival which also stars Maggie's younger son, Toby, as Horner.

What would a Maggie Smith picspam be without a reference (or two LOL) to one of her greatest roles of all time - Jean Brodie? Portrayed originally by Vanessa Redgrave, Maggie's Miss Brodie, according to her biographer Michael Coveney, is far more accurately and severely Scottish than Ms. Redgrave's. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science agreed, awarding Maggie the Best Actress Oscar for 1969. "Jean Brodie" was also chosen for the Royal Command Performance. And today you get a bonus wallpaper, featuring Muriel Spark and four of the actresses who have portrayed Jean Brodie - Vanessa Redgrave, Maggie, Geraldine McEwan, and Fiona Shaw.
