To be incredibly random, was anyone else INCREDIBLY annoyed that Meryl Streep lost the Best Actress academy award.
Don't get me wrong, I love Kate Winslet but her role in 'The Reader' was a supporting one so I have no idea what the academy was thinking. Not to mention that Meryl Streep is completely unsurpassed in acting ability. The woman's a freak!
It has some eerie similarities to Nicole Kidman's win for 'The Hours.' That was a supporting role as well and she won for best actress in a leading role.
It just annoys me. If she'd won for 'Revolutionary Road' I'd say 'nice work, Kate' but when it's the wrong category... urgh! It's so irritating.
And I love Meryl Streep. That has something to do with it. God, on average she's nominated every two years for an oscar and yet has only won twice. 'Kramer vs. Kramer', which was brilliant and 'Sophie's Choice' which is beyond brilliant. It goes straight up to 'best performance ever' category. For me anyway.
I just want her to get more oscars than Katharine Hepburn who said she was the worst modern actress. It would just be so ironic. She's already surpassed her for nominations now she needs to do so for wins. Mwahaha
And the randomness will end there...

I agree. I couldn't believe she didn't win ... I mean Kate was good in "The Reader" but still...
Was anyone surprised that Heath Ledger got his Oscar?

Meryl never wins; not oscars anyway. Did you see her speech for the SAG award? It was hilarious. All her speeches are actually. She - unlike some actors - actually knows how to give a speech. lol.
As for Heath ... no, I wasn't surprised. He was always going to get it.
He should have got an oscar for his work in 'Monster's Ball.' Has anyone seen that? He is amazing and (don't lynch me) way better than he was in Batman. He could have done that role with his eyes shut. Don't get me wrong, he was great, but if you see this small bit in Monster's Ball you'll understand what I mean.

I was furious that Meryl didn't win and went on a full rampage about it. She's a way better actress than Kate Winslet and I'd never even heard of "The Reader" until the Oscars. (Same with "Slumdog Millionare" which won like 8 oscars....I have no idea what that movie even is) Oh, and "Doubt" was amazing, very powerful....see it if you haven't.
I was also a little upset about Viola Davis losing to Penelope Cruz, but thats just me. But on a good note, WALL-E won some stuff so that made me feel better. and didn't someone say that "Mamma Mia" got more money than "Titanic?"

Yeah, 'Mamma Mia' has made about $580 million now (and that keeps growing) and is officially the largest grossing british movie in history AND is the fastest selling DVD in history as well. I was very happy. And I loved Doubt; the confrontation scenes between Meryl Streep and Phillip Seymour-Hoffman are incredible. Two actors at the top of their game, with that script put together makes one amazing film. And Viola Davis was astounding. I will quote Meryl Streep here: 'To the gigantically talented Viola Davis; my god someone give her a movie!!!' That line 'It's only until June' was just ... wow. I was completely glued to the screen. Of course, I had to see it with my mother (bad idea) as we then proceeded to disagree about everything in the film though the one thing we COULD agree on was that Meryl Streep was amazing. Mum had been saying she wasn't (just to annoy me, I think) and then we got out and she said 'FINE, you're right.' So, I won that round. lol It's not that I think Kate Winslet is a bad actress; I think she's great but in my (warped) world the ranking of actor skill goes like so. - Bad actor/actress - Average actor/actress - Good actor/actress - Great actor/actress - MERYL STREEP!!! There are other amazing actresses but Meryl Streep just gives perfect performances nearly every time. I can't think of any other actress that can do that. Though of course Cate Blanchet is amazing as is Judi Dench, there's just something about Meryl Streep that is ... undefineable but there. If that makes sense, which it doesn't, but I tried.

Haha, my mom does that too with Meryl. I'll say she was fantastic in a movie and she'll contradict for a bit, than realize Meryl is always fantastic! Kate Winslet isn't horrible, but I just think Meryl's way better. Cate Blanchet...didn't she do "Notes on a Scandel" with Judi? That was another really good movie.

Yeah, Cate Blanchet did 'Notes on a Scandal' and was amazing. She is really talented but Meryl is in a league of her own. Have you seen 'Sophie's Choice'? She is breath-taking; no one should be that good and yet she is.
Crazy woman.

I absolutly adored 'Sophie's Choice'! She was so perfect. There is no other actor/actress like her.

Unless I'm mistaken, and I definitely might be, Adjusted for inflation, Titanic is still the number one grossing film.
I actually don't know anyone who saw 'The Reader'. Not anyone, and I hang out with Actors all day.

If you do the inflation thing then it's actually 'Gone With the Wind' who has grossed the most amount of money. which I find hilarious. That I'm sure of as my friend is a nutcase (worse than me) when it comes to film and knows everything money-wise. Honestly, I love her to pieces, but she's crazy. Which is why we get a long so well. 'Gone With the Wind' is a great movie. Not my favourite but Clark Gable is pretty suave. lol. Who can forget the famous 'Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn'? Though my personal favourite from the film was 'I just murdered somebody! I won't think about that now; I'll think about it tomorrow.' I do love Scarlett O'Hara. And I'm fairly sure that Mamma Mia is bigger; for British film anyway. Meryl Streep was talking about it on an interview which I have completely forgotten ... Again, I might be wrong but I'm fairly sure that's what she said. I tend to watch most of her interviews and speeches as she's usually pretty hilarious though there was one where she got incredibly annoyed with the interviewer. He was being a complete a***hole and I thought she handled it very well. I would have knocked his lights out. lol. I saw 'The Reader' and it was great, I'll admit that, but Doubt was out of this world. I'm slightly obsessed and am really excited as I persuaded my local movie theatre to give me two GIGANTIC Doubt posters to go up next to my 'Mamma Mia' poster. A bit of a contrast but what the hell? God, next to the 'Mamma Mia' poster are a series of London prints so there is absolutely no theme to my flat. But I love it and that's the main thing.

Indeed!
And, coincidentally, I turned on my television when I got home today annnnnd.... Titanic was *just* starting. I was like, floored by the cosmic favor I had just been granted. I must have done something very kind and not known it... that, or I'm in cosmic debt...

I can never decide about Titanic. Sometimes I'm like 'Awww, this is sweet' and others I say 'You just let go of him! That doesn't make sense!'

That is the eternal question. Was Jack being deep and morally profound, meaning "never let go of your life" or was he being literal, "Do *not* let me sink to the bottom of this ocean."
Yep.
And was it really necessary for Old Rose to throw that beautiful, expensive necklace into the ocean? Couldn't she have handled her issues some other way? Seriously.

Ha! I decide which depending on my mood. Good mood; he was being profound - Bad mood; he was being literal. And I agree about that necklace! It's so pretty and she just throws it in. She could have sold it or something. But, oh no, she has to be deep and throw it in. Ah well, Titanic's not a favourite movie anyway so it doesn't occupy my thoughts for very long. lol. Adaptation on the other hand ...
