As do I.
We're all nice, so a canon board would probably lead to better concrit, as opposed to snark.
It's an intriguing idea....

Oh dear I have a lot of things to say now and I'll probably forget some, so I apologise in advance for the long post and the rambling.
As for the canon board I say no, I think it's difficult enough as it is to categorise and that board would just add pressure and who is ever going to judge their fic as canon? It's a hard thing to do to even write completely canon, nevermind acknowledge that it is so. And I think the fact that we are all nice would pose more of a problem, it's a touch beyond criticism to say to someone that you don't think their fic is canon at all.
I agree with whoever said that the problem was we know so little about Minerva, and before now, so little about Albus. It's hard to write a story without developing their characters, which is all down to interpretation and will most certainly lead to one or both of them being OOC to some people, but in-character to others.
And fanon, I've given this a lot of thought today. One of the reasons that I do love to write ADMM is that it is my only creative output, and their characters are undefined enough to develop on from canon interpretations. Which brings me to what I think fanon is. To me it is what we can see in their characters from what we already know, it's accepted by us because they're logical, they fit the characters and they make sense. Take chess for example, we know Minerva must like chess because of her giant chess set in PS/SS, and Albus is the type to play also. The strategy and logic of it, for instance. That's why I don't think that fanon is such a bad thing, it's not things we've simply made up from nowhere. Saying that, however, canon is important but true pure canon is near impossible, because we simply don't know enough.
On a completely unrelated point my thoughts on why they are actually together. I know the JKR quote, and it torments me, but they don't have to be equals to be together, or married. And there is a lot of evidence for their closeness at least. Minerva is far more obviously in love with him, than he her. But she's a strong woman and I really don't see her following him blindly like a lost puppy unless he loves her too. I think that's why they have a relationship, it's probably not the happily-ever-after us fluff lovers wish it were, but it is there. It's just complicated. But I don't think they are married.
And don't be sorry you brought this up, I'm glad you have, like I said I've thought about it and I do agree with much of what you said. It's just a friendly discussion and I'm really enjoying finding out what you all think.
Though I don't think a canon board would be good I do think a thread or some kind of discussion over what we all think their canon characters and relationship are would be good, and enlightening.
Oh and I thought of you another story today... Check and Checkmate by mugglemin. I've only read them once or twice because they broke my heart but they are very very good and in-character to what you asked for, I think.

Sir Francis Drake's Heir, I think I have found a fic that will meet all of your criteria, or at least most of it. Minerva and Albus are very much in canon with their character and their actions. They are not really together, just old friends that respect each other and enjoy each other's company. They are very much Headmaster and Deputy Head in this story. I hope you enjoy it. It is called A Lioness by Dragonlady7. It is the only HP story she has written. Here is the link to it on FF.net. www.fanfiction.net/s/1839976/1/A_LionessLet me know if you like it. It is one of my favorites and I have it saved on my computer. It just took me awhile to find it. JKMcGonagall (Kay)

My brain is dead at the moment all the time, so I can't really contribute much to this discussion, but I agree with a lot of what EloquentPhoenix said.

Hi all,You all are fabulous I just wanted to read like these fics you reccomended, no sweet AD/MM stories. I guess I am too late to replay this. Your conquer is finished. But I found this new one yesterday. I have to admit this is NOT an ADMM story but SS/MM one, implied some relationship around Minerva, and manipulative Dumbledore. The most impressive idea is somehow the author keeps characters in character, but can you believe wicked Minerva McGonagall?? www.fanfiction.net/s/3689916/1/The_Unholy_Trinity

EloquentPhoenix, I do believe you've hit the nail on the head, i was just going to make a similar statement in a some what general pissed off feeling lonely rant kinda way cause thats just how feel tonight.
With all due respect guys, JKR has shot our belief of what canon is completely out the water this week when she answered that question. We can continue to write our own version of how we think that canon would have played (is that fanon? I don't understand that term) but real true JKR induced canon no longer exists and apparently never did in the first place (She lies!).
Now I don't know about the rest of you but i'm not planing on abandoning this pairing simply cause it doesn't exist in JKR's world, most my personal ships don't exist in their creators minds, even though they are way better then what the creators have served up.
At the end of the day all i'm looking for in a good quality piece of fiction is the ability to escape from the real world, after all the fantasy world that this pair are from sure as hell beats the crappy place we inhabit...(can you tell i'm feeling lonely at the mo?! Sorry.) That fic may once in a while contain Those children, That dress ect ect but every now and then thats what is craved, very true its not wanted all the time but sometimes its nice to read a really off the wall fluffy fic.
And now i'm going to hide cause i'm sure you all want to lynch me or ignor me....which ever my day can't get any worse.
J. xx

Hmm, seconded all of that. Fanfiction is my freedom, my creativity, my other world, my escape. I want a fic I can lose myself in, forgetting that I'm actually reading it and not living it. More often than not that is the canon that was originally requested, but now isn't because it can't be. So whilst I still stand by what I've said before, TabbyForever you have hit the nail on the head, I think.

Isn't that the one where Minerva has slept with literally everyone. As in from Hagrid, to Hooch, to Sprout to even Flitwick, I think the author threw in Filch, Lupin, Albus and maybe even Trelawney and Sirius? In fact, the only person she hasn't slept with is Severus.
Yeah... I don't like it. I've put Minerva with a lot of people (separately), but she never struck me as a 'sleeping around' person.

I agree with TabbyForever, and Eloquent Phoenix.
I was surprisingly unconcerned when JKR shot down the ADMM ship - though I was a little disappointed with the bluntness of the question. Best to keep some ambiguity, I think. What I always loved about the ship was that everything was always left unsaid... There have been some of the most beautiful fanfics that have developed over the course of the book because we know so little about the characters. Some of my favourite fics are all about 'behind closed doors' and I always thought that was a lovely aspect of the ship.
I still think that, because I never truly considered ADMM to be canon after HBP, but fanfiction is all about imagination and going beyond the pages of a book.
After all, if JKR had said 'Yes, Albus Dumbledore was married to Minerva and they had five hundred children' from page 1 of the first book... well, I think it might have destroyed some of the delightfully obscure aspects of what I considered to be their relationship.
And, even though their relationship can't be considered strictly 'canon', 60+ pages on fanfiction.net can't be wrong! Not to mention countless ADMM fans, and countless non-ADMM fans who always imagined them together, anyway. And Maggie Smith.
It's always nice to dream, which is what fanfiction is all about...

That was lovely, maritelske!
I agree about the canon being shot down after HBP: I stopped caring about it being canon after book 6.
Although I am sort of craving one of those cliche-heavy fics right about now. I've just now finished book 7 (I took my time -grin-) and I'm a little tired of all of the drama, honestly. I'm quite ready to sit down and read a fluffy MM/AD fic about them locked in a cupboard and sharing a cup of tea and a laugh.
*dreamy sigh*

I was surprisingly unconcerned when JKR shot down the ADMM ship Amusingly enough, it was after I read that interview that I started seriously getting into AD/MM. My timing has always been appalling. And, even though their relationship can't be considered strictly 'canon', 60+ pages on fanfiction.net can't be wrong! Not to mention countless ADMM fans, and countless non-ADMM fans who always imagined them together, anyway. And Maggie Smith What did Maggie Smith say? I've read somewhere else that she said something but I have been unable to find it anywhere.

I've read somewhere else that she said something but I have been unable to find it anywhere. She said the following remarks when Richard Harris passed away ( www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2002/10/27/nharr27.xml): Dame Maggie Smith, who starred as Prof Minerva McGonagall to Harris's Prof Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films, said: "My heart goes out to his family. It is a great loss. I am going to miss him terribly.
"We walked around as a pair in Harry Potter. I always think Prof McGonagall was madly in love with him anyway.
"It was a great pleasure to be with him and it's going to be odd doing a Potter film without him. I just don't know what we're going to do."
She added: "You had the feeling he was very frail on set, but he was always there doing his bit.
"I think he loved the films precisely because he was doing it for his grandchildren, who browbeat him into taking the part."Edit: Can I just add how very - er - odd I find that wording in the beginning? Minerva McGonagall to Harris's Albus Dumbledore? So what are they saying...?

@ Sir Francis Drake's Heir: I've got another fic for you: "Dark nights" by Morgan72uk: four chapters, right after Voldemort killed Harry's parent, Minerva and Albus are IMO in character. And it's not sweet, no child, no dress, no happy ending. Link: www.fanfiction.net/s/3051454/1/Enjoy.

I concur with everything the original poster said, except I admit that there are times in which I get in a sappy, fluffy mood and bemoan the fact that we get no MMADluv in DH and that JKR made it blatantly apparent in the last chat that she is not a Secret Keeper. Thus, I just want to sink my teeth into a fic in which AD and MM are head-over-heels in love with each other, are married and have multitudes of baybeez (even if they are clichély named *cringe*).
I think there is a time and place for everything. Do I think that MMADfic needs to evolve? Yes, and I know of several authors that think outside the box and take MMAD in a (wholly and/or slightly) different direction. But we shouldn't turn our backs on fics that use the same, worn out formula. How many of us have Steel Magnolias moments and need a good cliché or three to help us get over the fact that we aren't really canon and have been reminded of that fact? *raises hand* *both of them*
I, however, would not be opposed to seeing MMADfics take on a bit more creativity and innovation. But it doesn't mean that I won't enjoy other fics that tread the beaten path.

There are some brilliant ADMM authors out there. I won't deny that I am beyond sick of the cliches we see with the pairing, but there are a few diamond fics out there. Unfortunately Minerva isn't a huge character in fandom (unfortunately) so there is so little variety, which is a great pity. Some other pairings with Minerva can work (there are a number of brilliant RL/MM fics out there) but they're normally one-shots, which is dreadful.

No offense. I am going to state my honest opinion and thoughts. If people want to write that, they will. They won't do it for you, they do it because they want to. Smarten up and learn how life is. So try not to force people into writing. As a soon-to-be published author, I can safely say that no one is going to write FOR YOU. They will do it because they want, and if they want to do it for you, great. But you can't force them to. So take a good look at your post, and think about what you're doing. No offense meant.
