Breathless.
A/N: I’m putting Albus and Minerva at roughly the same age and they married before the war Grindelwald war started. This is my first ADMM fic so I hope you all like it; I tried to keep the fic as relevant to the lyrics as I possibly could. I didn’t use a beta so I apologise for any mistakes I've missed. I have also posted it on ff.net under the name of PrincessHarri29 in case any of you recognise it.
Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter that right belongs to J.K. Rowling, neither do I own the lyrics to Breathless they belong to Taylor Swift and her company. I am merely borrowing them.
Plot: Albus has returned to Minerva after defeating Grindelwald.
Minerva McGonagall was pacing the floor of her sitting room and playing absentmindedly with her engagement and wedding rings which hung on a chain around her neck. She would have loved to wear them on her left hand but she and Albus had decided that it was safer for them and the ones they loved if no one knew of their marriage. As she paced Minerva began thinking about their wedding day and the glorious years that had followed, she just hoped he would return to her and they would continue. On hearing the portrait to her rooms swing open she whirled around to see the man she had been waiting for.
Here you are now
Fresh from your war
Back from the edge of time
And all that you were,
Stripped to the bone
I thought you'd want to know
That when you feel the world is crashing
All around your feet
Come running headlong into my arms
Breathless
I'll never judge you
I can only love you
Come now running headlong
Into my arms
Breathless
Minerva watched as Albus walked into her room, far enough so as not to be hit by the closing portrait before stopping. She wanted more than anything to take him in her arms and just hold him but years of marriage had told her that at times like this he needed to make the first move. Albus was content to stand there for a few moments just drinking in the image of his wife. He had missed her more than he could describe and just wanted to look at her. His need to hold her soon overcame the one to just look at her. Within the blink of an eye he was in front of Minerva, gathered her into his arms and held her in a way that suggested he was never going to let her go.
Lay down your guns
Too weak to run
Nothing can harm you here
Your precious heart
Broken and scarred
Somehow you made it through
I only ask that you won't go again
When you feel the world is crashing
All around your feet
Come running headlong into my arms
Breathless
I'll never judge you
I can only love you
Come now running headlong
Into my arms
Breathless
She could feel him shaking through both fatigue and emotion so gently moved them both over to the armchair by the fire. Their embrace was broken while she waited for him to get comfortable in the chair but he didn’t let go of her hand. Once he was settled, Albus drew Minerva down onto his lap and once again held her close. Minerva tilted her head so she could look into his eyes and she saw it all. She saw his grief and his guilt and she knew it was over. Grindelwald was gone and it had been Albus who had defeated him. She took his face in her hands and pressed a kiss to his forehead before placing his head on her chest. She knew he would be comforted by the sound of her heartbeat and the movement of her hands as she began to run them through his hair. They stayed like that for some time before Albus began to shift signalling his desire to stand. As soon as they were on their feet Albus pulled her close again and brushed his lips against hers. Minerva instinctively deepened the kiss and their tongues danced together until both were breathless. When they broke apart Minerva once again looked into his eyes and knew he needed her as much as she did him. Still without one word being uttered she took his hand and led him to her bedroom where they would complete their reunion.
So glad to see you smiling
So good to hear your laugh
I think that you've found you even
Missed yourself
I'm only asking this because I think that
Truth be told
Oh, you'll never go again
Again
When you feel the world is crashing
All around your feet
Come running headlong into my arms
Breathless
I'll never judge you
I can only love you
Come now running headlong
Into my arms
Breathless
Breathless
Since his return Albus had opened up to Minerva; she had sat and listened providing words of love and comfort. Now, two weeks on everyone was pleased to see that the Headmaster was back to his normal, cheery but eccentric self. He was always smiling and laughing and although some suggested it may just be a front, Minerva was happy to report that it most definitely wasn’t. She would know if it was.
It was finally the end of a very long week of teaching for Minerva and as she entered her rooms she was glad of the silence that met her. However she was not glad that Albus was at the Ministry but before she had time to dwell on the lack of his presence; he came bursting through the portrait hole. Rushing over to her he picked her up and spun her around beaming.
“Albus! What on earth has gotten into you?” she asked as he put her down.
“Well my dear, my meeting with the Minister was very productive. I officially registered our marriage with him and I must say he seemed incredibly happy for us,” he told her still beaming like a child on Christmas morning. Before Minerva had a chance to reply he distracted her by taking off the necklace that held her rings. He slipped them off the chain and bending down on one knee he took her left hand and put both the engagement and wedding rings in their rightful place. Minerva had never felt so happy; leaning towards Albus she cradled his face in her hands and gently pulled him up to standing position.
“I love you, Minerva Dumbledore,” he whispered, inching closer to her.
“I love you too, Albus Dumbledore,” she whispered back, closed the small gap still between them and captured his lips with her own.
As their kiss came to an end Albus pulled Minerva into a tight embrace and as they held each other they knew that, for now at least, everything was perfect.
