Alrighty, so this is my first ever published fic (though certainly not the first written). I am RIDICULOUSLY nervous, so please be nice. However, constructive criticism is welcomed. Not beta-ed, but it shouldn't be too bad, grammar-wise. Let me know what you think!
Um, rating...like none. It's a cute fic. Also, the ADMM will come if you are patient, I promise!
Two's a Company, Five's a Family
It was Harry Potter’s twentieth birthday, and Molly Weasley had gone to great lengths to ensure that it did not go unnoticed. The Weasleys and the Grangers were present, of course, but the entire Order of the Phoenix was there as well. Rather than stay crammed in the small living room the Burrow possessed, Mrs Weasley had set up in the back garden.
Harry looked around, still slightly stunned at what had happened—and what had been happening—these last few months and years. Wizards and witches up and down the country had been hard at work sorting it all out, but for once the work was not done in fear.
The moment Tom Riddle’s body had struck the ground with that final thump, and the golden burst of dawn had alighted the Great Hall, a loud, echoing crack had sounded. The sound had been so loud it had been distinguishable, even, from the roar of delight at Lord Voldemort’s defeat. It had taken months of research, confusion, and Albus Dumbledore’s time, but finally, it was declared: Lord Voldemort’s defeat had brought with it a wave of powerful magic that had miraculously reduced the age of every over-17 British witch and wizard, to varying degrees. Albus Dumbledore, for example, lost a century, while Ron Weasley looked exactly the same. Mr and Mrs Weasley lost roughly ten years, and Remus Lupin looked much less shabby.
In theory, this did not provide much of a problem (muggles were strangely oblivious), but inevitably, conflicts arose. People started naming their appearance-age as their actual age (Auntie Muriel said she was sixty-two) but strangely, the fad caught on. On rare occasion, elderly women, now young, were having children. Families received new additions unexpectedly, and looking younger and more attractive seemed to bring out both the worst and the best in people.
Despite all of this, Harry Potter was happier than he had been in a long time. He and Ginny, his steady girlfriend of three years, were as happy as Ron and Hermione, dating as of May 1997. Despite the deaths of his close ones, such as Mad-Eye Moody, Colin Creevey, even Hedwig and especially his godfather, Harry was doing well.
‘Come in, Minerva, come in. How are you?’ Molly Weasley’s voice echoed across the grounds. Intending to greet his old Transfiguration teacher, but impeded by the crowd of people if the yard, Harry settled for finding Ron, who was found by the food.
‘Huge crowd, innit?’ Ron said through a mouthful of food. At Harry’s nod, he gave a huge swallow and continued, ‘I heard Dumbledore’s coming, that right?’
‘Mrs Weasley he was going to try, but he’s got a ministry meeting this afternoon, so I dunno if he’ll make it,’ Harry replied, trying to sound as if this did not bother him. He had long-since forgiven the Headmaster, but he looked forward to seeing him when he could. Ron nodded, tactful enough not to press the issue.
‘Wotcher, Harry,’ said a voice at Harry’s elbow. Turning around, Harry was happy to find both Tonks and Remus grinning at him. Hugging Tonks and shaking hands with Lupin, Harry asked, ‘How’s Teddy, then?’
‘He’s at my mother’s for the night,’ Tonks replied. ‘He wanted to see you, but we could use a break.’ She winked at him before calling ‘Kingsley!’ and striding off.
‘How’s it going at the ministry?’ Lupin asked Harry.
‘Really well,’ Harry admitted. ‘I just finished Auror training two weeks ago. It’s good to get back some semblance of normalcy.’
Laughing together, Harry and Lupin noticed a small, black-haired boy stretching for the snack table. He was quickly joined by two others, all three of them identical, though dressed differently. They couldn’t be older than two. As Harry watched, one of them glanced in his direction. Harry started in surprise. The boy had bright, piercing blue eyes.
