Genre: Romance
Albus Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was playing chess with Deputy Headmistress Minerva McGonagall in his office one early August morning. They had worked many nights until one in the morning preparing for the new school year and most nights ended up playing a game of chess to relax before going to bed.
“I’m going to miss these late night chess matches when school starts again,” Minerva commented as Albus took his turn.
“Why, Min, who says we have to stop playing chess late at night just because school is in session? One might think that you are sick of seeing me,” Albus teased.
Minerva replied, “ No, I didn’t mean that. I love our chess games, but it would be highly inappropriate for students to see me coming out of your office in the early morning hours. Mr. Potter and the Weasleys are out after curfew at least once a week. Imagine the rumors if one of them caught me!”
“Min, there are already rumors about us. In fact, Fred Weasley asked me bluntly if there was anything going on between on us,” Albus told her.
Minerva demanded to know, “What did you tell Mr. Weasley?”
Albus looked guilty. “I started chuckling. I couldn’t help it. I told him that there was not anything going on between us. Fred replied that it was obvious that we were in love and we should do something about it.”
Minerva was not amused. “ Those Weasley twins! Just because I love you that does not mean it is any of their business.” Realizing what she had just said, she turned bright red and quickly said, “I’m sorry, Albus. I shouldn’t have said it. It just slipped out of my mouth. Please ignore that comment.”
“Min, do you really mean that?” Albus asked, looking touched. He never thought she would feel the same way about him. Maybe, just maybe, she did.
Minerva replied calmly, “I’m sorry. Forget that I even said it.”
“No, Min, I really need to know the truth,” Albus said.
Minerva sighed. Why should she tell him her feelings when most likely he would not feel the same way about her? Even on the slight chance he did, it was unlikely they would be able to act on their feelings. What did she have to lose though? She had already said she loved him. She took a deep breathe and said, “Albus, I know you probably don’t feel the way I do. I can’t help but have these feelings. I’m in love with you.”
Albus put a hand on her shoulder. “Min, you don’t know how long I have been waiting to hear that. I have loved you since you were my student.” Minerva and Albus just stood there looking at each other for a few minutes. Albus leaned in and kissed her passionately. Minerva returned the kiss and they moved into the bedroom. Needless to say, neither got any sleep that night. However, they discovered something much better than sleep: love.
