Minerva watched in envy at Molly and Arthur Weasley, and at Poppy Pomfrey and Alastor Moody as they bid each other good bye. She looked at Albus with longing. Unlike the other couples in the room no one knew they were together, not to mention the fact that they had been married for forty years. Albus, along with other members of the order, including Arthur and Alastor, were needed for field work in the war against Voldemort. They had only learned of the assignment today so those with loved ones were bidding them good bye for two weeks. Albus and Minerva always had a routine they went through when one of them went away, and the only other time they were not allowed to go through with it was when Albus was forced from Hogwarts last year.
Minerva had made up her mind. She wasn’t going to let her beloved husband leave without their good-bye, and if that meant blowing their secret then so be it.
“Albus!” she called.
Albus Dumbledore turned immediately when Minerva McGonagall called his name. He had been thinking the same thing, and he desperately needed to hold her before he left. In two strides the wizard and witch met in the middle of kitchen. Albus’ arms immediately went around her small waist, and Minerva rested her hands on his chest. Their cheeks touching as if they were dancing.
“Be careful.”
“I will.”
“Miss me?”
“I already do.”
“Think of me?” Albus asked.
“Every second.”
“Dream of me?”
“My dreams are always about you, Albus.”
“Love me, Albus?”
“Always my love, and will you love me?”
“Forever.”
Albus closed the little distance between them and kissed his love’s lips. It was a long, sensuous, slow kiss. Albus Dumbledore had every intention of taking his time in kissing her, of repeatedly going over every nook and every curve of her small mouth and engaging her tongue in a battle that would leave them both breathless. He would not be able to kiss Minerva for two weeks, and he wanted this to last for as long as possible. Every person in the kitchen could feel the obvious love between the two Professors as they looked on to the declaration of said love. When they finally pulled apart, the dialogue continued:
“Come back to me in one piece, old man”
Cupping her face within his hands Albus replied, “I intend too. In one piece and alive.”
“You better come back alive or I will kill you.”
“I know, besides, how could I not come back to this,” he asked scanning her body with a suggestive look in his eyes.
“Albus…”she warned but she was smiling.
“I love you Albus.”
“And I love you, my goddess.”
With one final peck on the lips he and the order members accompanying him on their journey left.
After they had gone Poppy turned to Minerva and asked, “Would you like to tell us what that was about Minerva?!”
“What if I said no?”
“I would force you too. You can’t not tell us after what we just saw. You and the Headmaster just gave the children a fine lesson in snogging, Minerva.”
Unintentionally Minerva let her temper get the better of her, “So what am I supposed to do Poppy? Watch you and Molly get to tell your husbands good bye, but I can’t tell mine how much I’m going to miss him. We do that every time one of us has to leave, and I wasn’t going to stand here and let him leave without it. I mean, what if…what if he never came back?,” she asked her eyes full of tears.
“I’m sorry, Minerva. I didn’t realize you and Albus were married. When did you get married?”
“Albus and I were married on June 4th, 1961.”
Poppy stared at her in incredulity, “But, Minerva, that’s…that’s…”
“Yes, I know 40 years. No one knows, well no one knew till now, safe Aberforth, Albus’ younger brother. Not one word of this leaves this room, is that clear? Albus is very powerful, and I don’t want to be used against him. So to the outside world he a confirmed bachelor , and I am an old spinster. But in reality we have been very happily married for forty years. Now if you will excuse me I think I could use a nice, hot, long bath.”
The last thing Minerva heard as she ascended the stairs was the unmistakable voice of Ron Weasley shouting, “BLOODY HELL!!!”
