Part One,
Minerva looked over her clean classroom, and let out a contented sigh. Another year gone, but six more with those Weasley twins she thought to herself as she gathered some books to return to Irma.
Two hours later Minerva was certain that every exam was graded, every paper filed, and all of her duties were officially over for at least a few weeks so she headed toward her best friend’s, the Headmaster’s, office.
Albus Dumbledore’s office was a mess, though not with school related things. A distinctive three knocks met his ear, and he smiled softly as he told Minerva to enter.
Minerva’s smile faded when she walked in his office, “Good grieve, Albus! What is all this mess?”
Albus just continued to smile, “This mess is complied of everything I will need for my camping trip this weekend!”
Minerva gingerly made her way to the only chair available, the one at his desk, and took a seat. “Is there a big quidditch match that I didn’t hear about?”
Folding his sleeping bad Albus answered, “Not at all. I’m going hiking and camping the muggle way, and I’m sure it will be so much fun. I’ve got the flashlights, the tents, food, sleeping bags, a knife, and paper for a fire, everything I think, at least.”
Skeptical Minerva drew her next statement out, “The muggle way…”
Turning to look at her Albus winked, and just nodded.
“Is Aberforth going with you? You kept using the plural,” Minerva observed as she watched him start shoving things in a small carpet bag.
“Nope, but I’ll give you one hint as to who is. Only one hint, though, ready?” Before Minerva could respond Albus was holding up a sleeping bag with a big tabby cat on the front of it.
Minerva glanced over the bag once and with all seriousness said, “I’m sorry Albus I have no idea who is to go with you.”
Albus’ smile faded so he just shook the bag again and raised his eyebrows. Minerva mimicked his facial expression, but couldn’t stop herself from laughing especially when Albus’ eyes narrowed when she did so.
He put the sleeping bag up. “Now that that is settled we are leaving tomorrow at nine in the morning. I suggest you wear some pants, and not your dresses or your heavy robes. Remember we are not to use magic.”
Minerva had raised her eyebrow, “I don’t recall ever saying I would come.”
“You’ll come.”
“How are you so sure?”
“I’m irresistible. Hoards of women would kill one another to go on a private camping trip with me,” Albus replied smiling at her.
“Then go ask one of them.” Minerva rose to walk toward the door.
Albus’ smile had once again faded, “Minerva you will go with me won’t you?”
Minerva turned around to give him a sly smile and a shadow of a wink before she walked out the door.
The next morning at nine Albus was had loaded a car full of hiking stuff as he waited for Minerva on the front steps of Hogwarts. Arriving in slacks and a simple black tee, Minerva couldn’t quite believe she was going through with this.
“Albus, do you know how to drive a muggle car,” she asked skeptically walking up to it.
“I’ll be able to manage.”
“That’s reassuring.”
“Alright Ms. Sarcasm get in!”
After shuffling through some radio channels they were finally able to find one which played classical music, and therefore one they could both listen to. The drive was picturesque, and they had arrived at their destination about noon. After a light lunch Albus parked the car in the visitor’s lot, and naturally chose the longest trail to go on.
“Which trail, Albus,” Minerva asked as she rejoined him from the ladies room.
“We are going on Coyote Trail, which is eight miles total,” he replied enthusiastically.
Minerva blanched, “Eight? Albus are you sure we can do eight in only six or so hours?”
“I’m confident we can. It is the most difficult but the man in the center said it was doable. Now c’mon.”
Minerva had to admit hiking with Albus was fun, and definitely entertaining. He joked, pointed out various flowers, and took about a million pictures.
“Albus it is only a flower and you have pictures of five other ones. You are slowing us down,” Minerva exclaimed as she forcefully dragged him away.
The pinnacle of the trail was reached at four miles, and Minerva collapsed on one of the overhead rocks. She was beat, but the cool breeze felt nice. Closing her eyes she was unaware of Albus sneaking up beside of her. Deftly he removed her hairpins before she could protest.
“Albus, why did you remove those? It will take me forever to get my hair back up,” Minerva shouted as she leaned back to see his twinkling eyes look down at her.
“I wanted to see it blowing in the wind. It’s beautiful.”
A little flustered Minerva was not to be outdone, “Didn’t your mother every tell you that you had to control some of your urges and impulses?”
Looking down at her Albus gave her a look that caused a shiver to work its way slowly up her spine, and a jolt of desire to her middle. But the look vanished quickly, and he moved to sit beside of her.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?”
“Very. I wonder how far we can see,” Minerva thought aloud.
They sat up there for an hour just looking into the distance before Albus realized that they needed to get going if they were going to reach the campsite before it closed. The added dark clouds and threat of rain made Albus and Minerva move even quicker as they finished the trail.
