Will I Be Lonely This Christmas?
By QuillofMinerva and Griselda
Minerva McGonagall sat at her desk, it was two days before Christmas and she was alone. All of the students had gone home this year and Albus, had let the teachers return to their families for the festive break. Minerva had no one; she had lost her parents many years ago and had been an only child. She couldn’t even count on seeing Albus on Christmas day because he had been invited to a large family gathering. She tried not to envy him. After all, he was always there for her; he was her closest friend and confidant. She couldn't blame him for having a family simply because she didn't have one. But still, especially around these days, because of all the merriness and joy she often felt lonelier then ever.
She stared out of her office window and looked out over the lake with heavy heart, Christmas for her was the worst time of year. It reminded her of everything she didn't have; she had no idea what she was going to do on Christmas day. She would probably have her lunch in her rooms and then go back to her paperwork. It would have one positive result. Once Christmas was over, she would have some extra time left to spend time with Albus. She really tried not to feel sorry for herself. After all, it wasn't as if she didn't have anything. She had friends, a wonderful life at Hogwarts, she had... Albus.
She fiddled with the quills on her desk and stacked her papers neatly. Lost in her own little world of thought, she failed to notice the small, shining angel that came floating towards her desk, fluttering it's little wings furiously. Only when the angel made a small sound, almost like a cough, Minerva looked up. She recognized the Angel as one of the Christmas tree ornaments hanging in Albus' overly decorated tree.
'What in the name of Merlin' thought Minerva as she watched the little angle flutter above her.
Minerva looked around her to see if Albus was making this happen but she saw nothing. Minerva returned to looking at the angle and didn't say anything, merely looked up and waited for the angel to say something. The Angel opened her mouth and it a soft, but clear voice it began to sing her favourite Christmas Carol...silent night
“Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace”
Resting her chin in her hand, she gazed at the singing Angel, a soft, rare smile playing around her mouth. Only Albus would do this. He knew how much she loved this song and he had taken all this trouble to transfigure a simple ornament into this lovely creation. Minerva wondered where Albus was, she hadn’t seen him that morning but he was obviously about because of the angel. She wanted to thank him for making her smile and also wanted to challenge him to a game of chess. She held out her hand to the angel and it landed with a soft thud on her hand. The angel smiled one last time, folded her wings neatly and closed her eyes. Smiling too, Minerva deserted her Office in search of Albus. Eventually she ended up at the gargoyle... Minerva took a deep breath; she felt the usual excited butterflies in her stomach as she approached his office. The door sprung open without her even knocking.
"Albus?" she called out
"I'm in here", came his somewhat muffled reply.
She looked around, but couldn't see him anywhere. "Where are you?"
"In my bedroom", he answered. "Would you mind coming in?"
She took several deep breaths to calm herself. Usually she avoided being together with him in such personal spaces as bedroom. When she entered she noticed his open trunk on the floor and every bit of clothing he possessed on the bed. Her face dropped. "You... you're packing...?"
"Very observant of you my dear," Albus said with a chuckle "Ah I see my angel found you. Did you enjoy your private performance?"
"Very much", she said smiling at him again.
For a brief moment she wondered how it was possible that this man could stir so many different emotions within her in such a short amount of time. A simple look could make her heart beat faster, a twinkle of his blue eyes could mesmerize her for hours, she could lose herself in his eyes. But when those same eyes were troubled, she would feel the worry squeeze her own heart, when he was tired or sad, she was hurt because of it. And when he was leaving, just like he was now, even if it was only for a short while, her heart broke.
