Summary: Set after Harry's outburst in Dumbledore's office at the end of OotP...
Afther the Outburst
The grounds of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry lay still as the sun was slowly setting behind one of the surrounding mountains. Most of the students had been out on the grounds to enjoy the sunshine after their exams and discuss the news: Voldemort was back.
They were sitting in little groups under trees, telling their friends that they had always believed Dumbledore and Harry and were therefore not surprised by the news. But the fear and shock in their eyes told a different story.
One boy wasn't enjoying the weather with his friends. Harry Potter was sitting on the edge of the lake, sheltered from the gaze of any prying eyes, behind a tangle of shrubs, staring out over the gleaming water. He was thinking hard about the events of the last few days and about his godfather. He knew he couldn't be seen by passers-by, as tears streamed down his face.
What he didn't know was that a single man standing behind the open window of the topmost tower was watching him.
Albus Dumbledore stood there, watching Harry with his blue eyes and twirling his long silver beard around his finger.
He turned his head and looked at the floor of his office. It was covered with silver pieces of his instruments. He hadn't bothered to vanish them. They were a constant reminder of his faults and as he didn't want to do the same faults again, he left them.
He sighed and turned back to the window, staring back at Harry, noticing his tears. 'Oh Merlin, what have I done?' he thought and felt a single tear trickling down into his beard. 'I've taken his last remaining family from him… But well… Sirius was a grown man…' he told himself, trying to ease the heavy feeling of guilt.
He was stopped in his musing as two slender arms circled around his waist and as he felt the warm form of his wife pressing against his back.
"Minerva" he whispered, turning around in her embrace and wrapping his own arms around her slender frame. "You don't know how much I've missed you, my dear!" he told her, brushing his lips against hers for a short welcome kiss. "How long have you been here?" he asked, wanting to know when she had left St. Mungos and how long she had been standing in his office because he hadn't heard her entering
"I arrived here about an hour ago" she answered, observing his appearance for the first time. His eyes were red and he had dark circles under them. He looked tired and sad and she saw that he had been crying. "Albus, what’s wrong?" she asked softly, cupping his cheek with one of her hands.
He shivered as her hand made contact with his skin. How had he yearned for her touches and now she was finally back. He turned his head to kiss her palm. "It's nothing my dear, just the consequences of an old man's faults." He told her.
She arched an eyebrow and looked at him "Ah yes, but that's quite some damage for ‘nothing’, my dear husband" she replied and pointed with her free hand on the floor. "Tell me, Albus, were you simply annoyed at your beloved silver instruments or is there something more?" she whispered softly, looking straight into his eyes. She saw tears welling up in his blue eyes and pressed herself against him, resting her head on his beard. "Tell me, Albus" she pleaded.
He was silent at first, but after a moment of hesitation he began to tell her about the events at the department of mysteries. As he told her about Sirius and his death she felt Albus' tears running in his beard and touching her cheek. She also noticed the tremble in his voice and the strong grip around her. He seemed to cling to her as if his life depended on it.
He told her of the discussion with Harry afterwards and how he had reacted to Albus' telling him about the prophecy. She knew about Harry's temper and she could imagine how it must be if he lost it and smashed things. She also knew how much it hurt Albus to see Harry like this and to know that he suffered. He would claim all the responsibility for the events and she thought that she could already feel the guilt weighing on him. 'Not as long as I'm his wife' she thought 'he can't take responsibility for everything that happens… especially if it's not his fault'
She lifted her head from his chest and looked up to meet his eyes. She saw his eyes and felt that he was unsure about how she reacted. 'Merlin, no!' she thought 'he doesn't think I might accuse him?!' Her fears were proven right when he suddenly averted her gaze and looked away.
"Don't do that, Albus!" she told him softly but firmly. "Don't you dare to turn away from me! You can't take responsibility for everything and don't you dare to even THINK that you are responsible for Sirius' death and Harry's reaction!" she continued firmly, reaching for her husband and turning his head back to her. "Yes, Harry is hurt, but that's normal Albus! He's grieving for Sirius and he needs time to get over it. But he loves you nevertheless Albus, don't you doubt that. He has adored you since he first put foot on these grounds and that won't stop. He just needs time.”
She could see his doubt, but also the love he felt. Albus just looked at his wife in wonder. She was such a beautiful woman and she always seemed to know what he thought. She was his anchor, his soul and he couldn't imagine his life without her.
"Oh Minerva" he said, lifting his hand to touch her face "You are my world, what would I do without you? You are my guide through all dark times and I love you even more for this. You are my goddess and I adore you more with every passing day."
Minerva blushed slightly at his praise but was inwardly relieved to push some guilt away. "Well, my knight in shining armor, what do you think about playing a 'Welcome back' game of chess with this goddess of yours?" she asked before kissing him deeply.
The kiss was broken in need of oxygen and because of Minerva's shriek. "Albus! What are you doing?" Albus had swooped her up in his arms, his blue eyes twinkling mischievously. "Well you see, my dear wife. I think your knight might be delighted to play chess, but your husband has other plans" He stated, and before she could answer he was carrying her to their bedroom.
