A/N: I changed the names in the song from "Albert Mooney" to "Prof. Dumbledore" and "Jenny Murphy" to "Poppy Pomfrey." The characters are JKR's except for Essie MacNeill, and her first name belongs to Tabby Bee!
*I'll tell me ma when I get home,
The boys won't leave the girls alone--
They pulled my hair, they stole my comb,
But that's all right till I get home!
She is handsome, she is pretty
She's the belle of Belfast city,
She goes courtin' one-two-three,
Oh, tell me, Mother, who is she?*
Minerva was annoyed. That was one of the only words for it. Ever since that new professor had taken over Defense Against the Dark Arts, Albus had been paying attention to the newcomer, not to her. The professor, Essie MacNeill, had come all the way from Belfast to teach. And she was beautiful. Stunning, in fact, some said. She was flirting with all the "available" professors, it seemed. And the professors had gotten just plain ANNOYING.
Severus had gone so far as to pull a pin out of Minerva's hair so her bun would fall out of place while they were alone in the staffroom the other day. And her favorite brush and comb were missing; they had just vanished. Personally, Minerva suspected Filius in that. He could have cast an invisibility charm so good that even she couldn't undo it.
*Prof. Dumbledore says he loves her
All the boys are fightin' for her.
They rap at the door, they ring the bell
Cryin' "Oh me true love, are thee well?"
Out she comes, as white as the snow
Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes
Poppy Pomfrey says she'll die
If she doesn't get the fellow with the rovin' eye*
All the male teachers had been fighting over Essie with each other. It was disgusting, Minerva thought. And disappointing, especially since Albus seemed to love Essie too. Minerva's heart was breaking. Albus kept saying, over and over, that he loved Essie. Minerva felt she would die of heartbreak. But she wasn't the only one. Poppy Pomfrey was desperate, Minerva found, to win Alastor Moody's heart.
*Let the wind and the rain and the hail blow high
And the snow come shovelin' from the sky
She's as sweet as apple pie
And she'll get her own lad by and by.
When she gets a lad o' her own
She won't tell her ma when she gets home.
Let them come and come they will
But it's Prof. Dumbledore she loves still*
All through September and October, Essie and Minerva's rivalry grew more and more apparent to the other professors. As the snow began to fall, ushering winter in, Professor Dumbledore finally noticed his Deputy's attempts to catch his eye. He realized what had been going on and what lay in Minerva's heart. He was deeply grieved to think that he had disappointed Minerva, his best friend and...and first love. He had loved her. But he thought that love had died out long ago. Now, thinking it over, he found it wasn't so at all.
No. Essie was nothing compared to his Tabby. His Tabby...He ran to Minerva's office, where she was at her desk, crying softly, head bowed. He entered quietly, and when she looked up, she saw him there.
"Minerva...Tabby," he said softly, "I'm sorry. I am VERY sorry, my dear...I had misplaced my love. My heart belongs to you, not Miss MacNeill. Will you forgive me?" Minerva nodded slowly. She leaned forward and kissed him.
