"What are you going to call him, Min? He's certainly a Dumbledore!" Poppy grinned at her friend as she handed Min's firstborn son to her. Before Minerva could answer, she was in pain again. "Push, Min, push! There's a twin in there," Poppy coaxed. Minerva did as she was told, and soon her daughter, Cielita Dumbledore, entered the world. As Poppy took Cie, Minerva held her son to her. He was smaller than his sister, that was for sure.
Minerva wondered what to call him. She ran through a list of names in her mind. Finally, she decided. "Duncan," she whispered, naming the little boy after her brother. "Duncan Albus Dumbledore." Duncan Albus Dumbledore was crying almost nonstop. Min wasn't sure she could handle this...She began to hum a tune, rocking Duncan in her arms. (Cie wasn't hard to get to sleep at all; she was already deep in dreamland.)
"For one so small,
you seem so strong
My arms will hold you,
keep you safe and warm
This bond between us
can't be broken
I will be here
Don't you cry..."
As time passed, Minerva noted her childrens' first smiles, and was glad to smile back at them. There were many other firsts. But just before their first birthday, something was evidently wrong with Duncan. He became very sick. Minerva took him back to St. Mungo's, where he lay in her lap, limp and still. The only sign of life he showed was his tiny fist, gripping her fingers. She sighed.
"For one so small,
you seem so strong
My arms will hold you,
keep you safe and warm
This bond between us
can't be broken
I will be here
Don't you cry..."
Duncan's heart beat faster and faster. His tiny lungs fought to breathe. But they just couldn't do it. Eventually, he collapsed, and his heart slowed to a stop. Minerva didn't know what to do...she wanted to die. She would have done something drastic had she not remembered she had her daughter to think of. Cielita...
"'Cause you'll be in my heart,
Yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forever more
You'll be in my heart
No matter what they say
You'll be here in my heart, always."
Duncan would remain in her memory, and in her heart. But she had Cie to think of, and Albus. Speaking of Albus, she had been hurt and angered by the realization that they had to keep their marriage secret...for now. They were eighty years apart...people wouldn't think well of either of them. It would be hard, she knew.
"Why can't they understand
the way we feel
They just don't trust
what they can't explain
I know we're different but,
deep inside us
We're not that different at all..."
"And you'll be in my heart
Yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forever more..."
Minerva shook her head. These people were unreasonable. Just because, ten years later, Albus was now Headmaster and had selected her for his Deputy...people were accusing him of favoritism, of affairs with her, of an inappropriate relationship. They were close, she supposed, but not right.
"Don't listen to them
'Cause what do they know
We need each other,
to have, to hold
They'll see in time
I know..."
She heard Albus' voice whisper to her, whenever Dolores Umbridge made another stupid, brainless Educational Decree. Stupid Ministry. Stupid Minister. Really, if it wasn't for the Order... She sighed in exasperation. Puh-lease. These idiots weren't going to get them anywhere.
At the end of the year, when Hagrid was attacked, she wasn't going to stand for the ineptitude or idiocy anymore. She ran outside, and fell as she was struck by four Stunners...When Albus heard about it, he cried. At midnight, he Apparated to Minerva's bedside, whispering to her.
"When destiny calls you
You must be strong
I may not be with you
But you've got to hold on
They'll see in time
I know
We'll show them together"
Two years later, Minerva pressed a kiss to Albus' forehead as he lay dying on the battlefield. Harry was dueling Voldemort in a fight to the death...She was proud of her young lion, he had come so far...she knew Albus was too, though he couldn't say.
" 'Cause you'll be in my heart
Yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forevermore
Oh, you'll be in my heart
No matter what they say
You'll be here in my heart, always
Always"
"Always, Albus," she murmured, kissing his last breath away.
"Forever, Minerva," she imagined him saying, as life left his body. And Minerva McGonagall-Dumbledore cried.
