For Kandie who needs to rant
Call The Man
Minerva McGonagall hurried into the Headmaster’s office. Her duties as Deputy Headmistress were over and her only desire was to lock herself in his office. The doors locked behind her and she settled into his chair. His old worn chair had molded to his form and she ignored the discomfort.
The portraits on the walls were silent but watchful and she turned to them and requested solitude. The occupants slowly left their frames but not before giving her anxious looks. Minerva waited until she was alone before running her hands along the top of the desk. The wood grain had softened with age but it was still smooth beneath her fingers.
She opened the top drawer and saw the ever-present bag of sherbet lemons. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she removed one from its wrapper and popped it in her mouth. The memory of his kisses filled her. A bitter smile flitted over her face. She had complained often of eating second hand lemon drops and he would only smile and pop another in his mouth.
The volumes of heavy books called out to her and she rose and began reading the titles. She knew every book in this room. She had read most of them, even the muggle ones. She pulled a leathered tome from its place and opened it. The smell of rawhide filled her nostrils and her eyes filled again.
She sat on the sofa near the fireplace and looked over at the bird stand in the corner. Fawkes, the most glorious phoenix in the world was gone. He saved his master’s life once again but Voldemort was prepared this time and the cherished fowl was taken from this world and would not return. She had seen the loss in Albus’ eyes for only a second but Voldemort had found the opening he sought and the love of her life was taken from her for always.
She missed the fury in Harry’s eyes as he destroyed the evil being that killed her love. She missed hearing the cheers after Voldemort fell to the earth and could not rise again. She only had eyes for Albus and now he was gone.
Her promotion had torn her very soul. The children she loved and guided needed her more than ever but she was numb. Today the ministry intended to hang a portrait of Albus Dumbledore on her office wall. Couldn’t they see that he was not meant to languish in a frame? Albus was fire and ice and passion and calm. As the new Headmistress she could seal the doors from intrusion. If only she could find a spell, a charm, or even a curse to guide her.
Albus had always encouraged her, guided her, and even applauded her when necessary. Even when forced to leave the castle he managed to send word. He was the one she always called when she needed help. Albus had always, somehow, managed to make things better. She couldn’t do this alone.
Call The Man
Close the door
Shut the world away
All the fight’s gone from this
Wounded heart
Across the floor
Dreams and shadows play
Like wind blown refugees
Call the man
Who deals in love beyond repair
He can heal the world
Of hearts in need of prayer
Shine a light ahead
When the next step is unclear
Call the man
He’s needed here
I close my eyes
I remember when
Your sweet love filled this empty room
The tears I cry
Won’t bring him back again
Unless the lonely star should fall
Call the man
Who deals in love beyond repair
He can heal the world
Of hearts in need of prayer
Shine a light ahead
When the next step is unclear
Call the man
He’s needed here
Needed in the chaos and confusion
From the plains to city hall
Needed where the proud who walk
The wires are set to fall
Call the man
Who deals in once upon a time
Maybe he
Can mend this broken heart of mine
Shine a light ahead
Now the future isn’t clear
Call the man
He’s needed here
Call the man
He’s needed here.
Minerva broke down in sobs as she realized the one who always stood by her side would not help this time. His words would remain silent, his smile unseen.
She rose and squared her shoulders. Albus would tell her to look forward. He would tell her that he had faith in her abilities and marveled at her talents. The voices outside the door reminded her to allow the castle to unseal them and she greeted the ministry officials with composure.
The ceremony only took a few minutes. The frame was empty and for just a moment Minerva hoped it meant it was a mistake but after she was alone again, she felt his presence for a second and glanced at the newest addition to the office.
Her love was smiling down on her gently.
“I wanted to see only you first, my dear.” His eyes still twinkled as she remembered and he was stroking his beloved Fawkes. “I knew you could find the courage to continue the work.”
“Albus, I don’t want to live without you. I need you here.” Minerva didn’t bother hiding the tears from him as she would have if he had stood beside her.
“I am always with you in spirit and when you join me in this great adventure we will have another lifetime together.” His eyes darkened regretfully. “Carry on, my love.”
Minerva gave a shuddering sigh and took her seat behind the desk. The desire to bawl and pound her fists on the desk was overwhelming but she swallowed hard and reached for the first letter needing her attention. She glanced up to see Albus’ eyes shining in approval.
There was no one to call, no one to hold her hand any longer but one day…
The song is sung by Celine Dion on her Falling Into You CD.
No need to review. Just feeling maudlin. It’s been 24 hours since we lost Kassie and it was either write or break something. Karlie
