The war was over. Surprisingly, not many casualties had been sustained on the side of the Light. But one sacrifice, more than any other, had grieved Albus Dumbledore. He wept for the loss of Minerva Renee McGonagall-Dumbledore, his wife, his Deputy, and his heart.
At her funeral, Albus tried to remain calm. But the bouquet of roses and thistles he lay on top of her casket set his heart to breaking once again.
Her three greatest friends and her own sister were inconsolable. Rolanda Hooch, Poppy Pomfrey-Moody, and Sylvia Sprout-Flitwick were huddled together with Selene Sinistra in an effort to calm themselves. Eventually, Poppy stood straighter and approached the Headmaster. She handed him a roll of parchment on which there were some verses they had adapted from a Muggle singer, Elton John.
"Candle In The Wind," Albus read. His eyes moved down the parchment as the four women began to sing softly.
Goodbye Scotland's rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
You called out to our school
And you whispered to those in pain
Now you belong to heaven
And the stars spell out your name
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall you
Along Scotland's heather hills
Your candle's burned out long before
Your legend never will
Loveliness we've lost
These empty days without your smile
This torch we'll always carry
For Hogwarts' golden child
And even though we try
The truth brings us to tears
All our words cannot express
The joy you brought us through the years
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall you
Along Scotland's heather hills
Your candle's burned out long before
Your legend never will
Goodbye Scotland's rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
Goodbye Scotland's rose
From a school lost without your soul
Who'll miss the wings of your compassion
More than you'll ever know
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And you footsteps will always fall you
Along Scotland's heather hills
Your candle's burned out long before
Your legend never will.
They finished, tears in their eyes, and Albus looked up. They were right. Minerva would never truly be gone. She still lived in their hearts. She would want him to be strong. He managed a sad smile. "Goodbye, my Scottish Rose," he whispered. "I love you."
