Title: Could You Be Mine
Disclaimer: All I own is the plot. I have no money so please don’t sue me!
A/N: This is a SAD fic... if the moderators decide that it belongs in the Angst section, be my guest to move it.
The newest member of the staff, Transfigurations Professor Minerva McGonagall, danced with the Charms Professor, Allan Manetti. The elder wizard sensed a certain sadness in the younger witch. He did not understand why though; it was supposed to be a happy event. Their Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, had just joined Allysa James in holy matrimony. The newlywed couple were dancing a few feet away, engrossed in each other. Minerva did not focus on her dance partner. She only focused on the radiating Albus and Alyssa Dumbledore.
It was the day when I first saw you
It really didn’t take more than one look
I felt it right away, that warm and crazy feeling
If you were mine, I would never let you go
You’re like a dream
Minerva had, from the minute she and Albus met, known that she could easily fall in love with him. And she had. She had tried not to but had failed miserably.
Albus and her became friends so fast it was as if they had know each other for many years. But then one day he introduced her to Alyssa James, a sweet young witch he had apparently fallen for. Minerva’s heart nearly broke. She knew that she was so very much in love with him but it seemed as if he did not share her feelings.
Her heart did break, in fact it shattered, when he a few months later told her that he and Alyssa were engaged.
Flashback:
When Minerva came back to her rooms she felt numb. Engaged. Albus Dumbledore, the love of her life, was engaged to be married. She went outside on the balcony and felt the rain soak her.
Outside it’s raining,
The sky keeps crying with me
Cause I am being sad, when I ought to be glad
Inside it’s hurting
Cause I am falling in love
With a man that I know I can’t have
The rain did not wash away the feeling of numbness but at least it gave Minerva some sort of satisfaction that she was not the only one crying. For crying she was.
It was late before she finally went to bed, soaked and freezing.
End Flashback
She was lost in her thoughts and did not notice that a man came over and tapped Allan’s shoulder, asking if they should switch partners for a dance. Suddenly she became aware that she was in the arms of Albus Dumbledore himself.
“Minerva? Are you okay?”
“I’m fine, Albus. Why would you think differently?” she lied.
“You seem… sad. As if something really bad happened. Like someone is dead.”
‘No one’s dead but my heart.’ She thought. “I’m fine, Albus. You take care of your… wife… don’t mind me.”
Will you ever know how I feel?
I know that you belong to someone else
Though I know that I still
Dream away about you
Could you be mine, I will always let you know
That I love you so
“Minerva if something is wrong, please tell me. It’s not good to keep it bottled up. I care about you, you know,” he gently said, holding her hand as they kept dancing.
“It’s nothing, Albus. Everything will be fine,” ‘…eventually… I hope’ she thought.
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure,” Minerva lied. “Now go dance with your bride.”
Baby, I know you’re the one
I’ve never felt this way before
I wish I could just let you know
Find a way to make it show
But I don’t know how
As Albus and Alyssa left the party later that night, Minerva made her way to her chambers. As she closed the door behind her she sighed. Then she began sobbing. He had broken her heart and then stamped on it by trying to be caring and considerate. She knew he would never do so on purpose but he had, unintentionally, ruined her life and her soul all in one night. The moment he said ‘I do’ her world had collapsed and the tears had begun streaming down her face. But as it was a very beautiful wedding and lots of women had been crying so no one thought it weird that she did.
Outside it’s raining,
The sky keeps crying with me
Cause I am being sad, when I ought to be glad
Inside it’s hurting
Cause I am falling in love
With a man that I know I can’t have
Minerva McGonagall never got married. She never stopped loving the one man she couldn’t have. She had to keep her feelings under control and built up a strong façade. Her and Albus never parted ways. They stayed friends until his death.
The fact that Minerva never married did not go unnoticed by Albus but every time he tried to talk to her about it she became defensive and said that she did not need a man to be happy and that she didn’t want any man to control her. But that was not true. She needed Albus so much but never told him. He had almost a hundred good years with his wife before she died. And after that he mourned so much, Minerva couldn’t bring herself to tell him of her feelings.
And so they stayed friends, in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, as long as they both lived. Even with broken hearts.
THE END!!
