A/n: I don't tend to do many song fics because I am not very good at them but I love this song and a plot bunny was born. The song is by Billy Joel and if you get chance to listen to it, you will love it too. This hasn't been beta read.
Albus Dumbledore watched from his portrait hanging in the headmistresses office, he had been gone for nearly a year now and the world was very different to how he had left it. The war was over, Harry Potter had defeated Voldemort, losing his life in the process but he had brought peace to the Wizarding world.
Sat at his old desk, with a quill on one hand and a gingernewt in the other, sat Minerva McGonagall. A bittersweet smile etched on her face as she glances at a picture of her and Albus together at some ministry ball which they had to attend for the sake of the Wizarding world. Little did she know, that had been the night when Albus Dumbledore had finally seen what had been in front of him for years.
She can kill with a smile, she can wound with her eyes
She can ruin your faith with her casual lies
And she only reveals what she wants you to see
She hides like a child, but she's always a woman to me
She had been his only constant in his life, a best friend, a confidant, a colleague and a wife all rolled into one. He was sure that she did not know how much she impacted on his life, for he had been unaware of it till that one particular ball when she had been asked to dance by Monty Deed. Albus had watched them dance, unaware of anything else happening in the room. He watched as she smiled and laughed at something the pompous man had said, Albus had never liked that man and that he had just case.
After the dance, she had returned to Albus' side and asked him about the war they were currently fighting. Her questions were to the point, Minerva McGonagall never beated around the bush, it wasn't her nature. She believed what she was told and even if she didn't then she simply accepted that she wasn't meant to be told. Little did she know that was what made Albus love her even more.
She can lead you to love, she can take you or leave you
She can ask for the truth, but she'll never believe
And she'll take what you give her as long it's free
Yeah, She steals like a thief, but she's always a woman to me
He had known her for ten years before the ball had made him see sense, in those ten years she had looked after herself. Everything she owned had been brought by her own money, she had saved for things that had been out of her price range and refused point blank to receive help. She was independent as the wind, doing what she saw fit when she wanted to do it. Argument had been of great amusement to both of them over the years, she was the only person who spoke her mind to the great and noble Albus Dumbledore. The arguments might have been wrong but she would never admit that, she would simply change her mind and end up looking like the cat that got the cream.
CHORUS
Ohhh... she takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants, she's ahead of her time
Ohhh... and she never gives out
And she never gives in, she just changes her mind
He watched her from his portrait intensely, she was unaware of his glaze because she was caught up in what she was doing. Loving her had been his downfall, there had been so many times when he was about to tell her but something would come up, namely a date with a suitor. It had been hell seeing her step out of the school grounds on the arm of someone that was not him.
And she'll promise you more than the garden of Eden
Then she'll carelessly cut you and laugh while you're bleeding
But she'll bring out the best and the worst you can be
Blame it all on yourself 'cause she's always a woman to me
Though she was independent, she always returned to him. She didn't know that it caused him pain each time she did that or that he welcomed the pain.
CHORUS
Ohhh... she takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants, she's ahead of her time
Ohhh... and she never gives out
And she never gives in, she just changes her mind
Minerva McGonagall was the kindest woman, he knew though he knew that she found it hard to express at times to people who did not know her. Other's thought her to be abrupt, cold and unapproachable but Albus knew a different side to her. On many occasion, she had been overly kind to him and then when someone was coming, she would change in front of his eyes into a woman he barely knew.
She's frequently kind and she's suddenly cruel
She can do as she pleases, she's nobody's fool
And she can't be convicted, she's earned her degree
And the most she will do is throw shadows at you,
But she's always a woman to me
Minerva McGonagall wasn't his best friend, his colleague, his confidant, she was the woman he loved but never told. She would always be a woman to Albus Dumbledore.
