When the world
Wasn't upside down
I could take all
The time I had,
But I'm not gonna wait
When a moment can
Vanish so fast.
Cause every kiss
Is a kiss you
Can never get back.
Lift me up
In your eyes
If you told me this
Is what Heaven is
Well you'd be right.
I've been waiting
Forever for this
This is the night.
Night had officially crept in at Hogwarts. The Headmaster's office was silent except for the occasional rustling of Fawkes's wings. Albus was relaxed in his favorite high-backed chair. His eyes were shut, but he was far from sleeping. It was on rare calm nights such as this that he liked to allow his mind to escape to peaceful memories of a far less troubled time- a time unplagued by Voldemort's reign of terror.
Albus was brought out of his reverie by a soft, familiar knocking at the door. He smiled to himself.
"Come in, Minerva."
She stepped inside and carefully closed the door. Fawkes fluttered on his perch but did not awaken.
"I thought you'd still be awake," she said.
Albus nodded and leaned into the candlelight.
"Care to join me for a game of chess?"
With a smooth wave of his wand he conjured a chess board, table, and two chairs.
"I'd love to."
Conversation immediately flourished, as did numerous pots of hot chocolate they shared. Midnight had long since passed, and Minerva had been declared champion of the game. Albus watched her yawn and stretch in an appealing cat-like fashion.
"Lovely," he said in almost a whisper.
"I beg your pardon?"
"I said... you're lovely."
Minerva's cheeks turned a rosy shade of pink.
Go for it!, the voice inside Albus's head was shouting.
This is your chance!
Albus leaned over the table, took her hand, and pulled her into a kiss. To his delightful surprise, Minerva deepened the kiss. When the lack of air overcame them and they were forced to release, it was Albus's turn to blush. Minerva dove under the table after the chess pieces that had managed to topple over to the floor. She pretended to drop a few more pieces in order to capture another moment to let it all sink into her mind.
"Here. Allow me to help you with that," he said, leaning under the table.
"No, no. I've got it. Thank you."
Both of them stood up, never losing eye contact. Albus vanished the board, table, and chairs with another wave of his wand. A small, fluffy couch appeared in its place.
When the answer
To all my dreams
Is as close
As a touch away,
Why am I here
Holding back
What I'm trying to say?
Lift me up
In your eyes
If you told me this
Is what Heaven is
Well you'd be right.
Hold me close
To your heart
I would go with you
To the ends of the earth
And we'll fly.
I've been waiting
Forever for this
This is the night.
Albus sat in the middle of the couch, and Minerva sat on the edge. He desperately wanted to hold her in his arms or at least hold her hand again. She had been so welcoming to his kiss. He was afraid to ruin the moment, but there was something he wanted to say.
Minerva reclined into Albus's arms, breaking the tension. He opened his mouth but quickly closed it again several times as if fighting for the right words to say. He finally took a deep breath and leaned over to Minerva's ear.
"I love you," he whispered.
Minerva turned to look him in the eye. Judging by her initial expression of surprise, Albus worried he had offended her by speaking these words too soon. Instead, she kissed him softly.
"I love you too."
This is the night
Where we capture forever
And all our tomorrows begin.
After tonight
We will never
Be lonely again.
Lift me up
In your eyes.
If you told me this
Is what Heaven is
Well you'd be right.
Hold me close
To your heart.
I would go with you
To the ends of the earth
And we'll fly.
I've been waiting
Forever for this
This is the night.
Minerva snuggled back into Albus's arms and soon fell asleep listening to his heartbeat. He watched her breathe deeply and listened to her purr, much like her Animagi form, as she dreamed.
Although he felt he could have watched Minerva forever, Albus soon joined her in slumber. The rest of the wizarding world would have to wait, at least until sunrise. Tonight was finally their night to shine.
