Where Are You Now?
Summary: This story is about Minerva and her struggles with letting Albus go after he dies. Based on the song of the same title by Britney Spears
Rating: 13+
Minerva had watched as the last carriage headed towards the train station at Hogsmeade. She climbed the stairs to her new office. After opening the door she walked in and towards the desk. She passed Albus’ portrait which was sound asleep. Minerva sat down and put her head in her hands. She just shook her head sighing.
Calling out your name, your face is everywhere. I’m reaching to you to find that you’re not there.
She had wanted nothing more than just to hear his voice. But no response came as she began to read the letter from Scrimgeour about his opinion for reopening Hogwarts that September. Her heart fell as soon as she had finished reading. She realized the ministry wasn’t going to allow them to reopen the school. Minerva half expecting this response had her defenses ready. She began to write into the late evening, perfecting and forming solid reasoning skills. She felt her body began to tire. At that point she headed up the stairs to Albus’ former bedroom. She felt a sense of nerves arise in her. She had been there many times before to talk with Albus, to lay besides him all night and occasionally even make love to him. She changed and lay down on the bed. She noticed it slightly smelt like Albus. She tried to sleep but it would not come till she fell into an uneasy sleep.
I wake up every night, to see the state I’m in. It’s like an endless fight I never seem to win. I can’t go on, as long as I believe.
Minerva chided herself, she was a grown woman, she should have been able to cope with death. She had been around it enough over the last few years fighting along side Albus and the Order of the Phoenix. She stared out at the lake and began thinking.
Can’t let go when I keep wondering. Where are you now? What have you found? Where is your heart when I’m not around? Where are you now? You gotta let me know, oh baby so I can let you go.
Minerva stared down at her hand and whispered an incantation as a diamond ring appeared on her left hand. “Albus, I can’t do this. I can’t go on alone.” Minerva Mc Gonagall said as a lone tear trickled down her cheek. Her mind yelled at her for being so foolish as to cry. But a small voice of logic argued that she needed to cry, that she needed to get the pain and sorrow out. “I can’t.” She whispered as she fell into another uneasy sleep there in her chair next to the window. She awoke early the next morning and decided to go clear her mind. As she was choosing her outfit for the day she realized she should say a proper goodbye. Her marriage was a secret and to have it come out at the funeral would have been releasing the flood gates for Minerva. The sympathy and coddling would have been too much for her to handle on top of her loss. She wore a light robe of Gryffindor scarlet. She released her hair and decided just to leave it down. He always said she was beautiful with her hair down. Minerva padded her way down to the lake. She walked around the edge for what seemed like an eternity.
I can hear your voice, the ring of yesterday. It seems so close to me but yet so far away. I should let it out, to say what’s left of me and close the doors of doubt, revive my dignity. But I can’t go on, as long I believe. Can’t let go, when I keep wondering. Where are you now? What have you found, where is your heart when I’m not around. Tell me where are you now, you gotta let me know, oh baby, so I can let you go.
“Minerva?” A voice questioned as she finished a lap around the lake. She looked up and found her face to face with Poppy. She said nothing but forced a smile upon her lips. “Are you alright dear?” She asked looking at her friend.
“I will be, I just need to know he’s okay.” Minerva said.
“Min, you just have to believe that. He can’t tell you that he’s alright.” Poppy said joining her as she continued to walk around the lake.
“I know, but I swear, Poppy, I can hear his voice I see him in the office, and I’m not sure I can deal with it.” Minerva said.
“Dear, he will always be with you. Here.” She said placing a hand on Minerva’s heart.
“Thank you Poppy.” She said as she went up to the grave site alone. She knelt beside the white tomb of her late husband, “Albus,” She whispered finding herself unable to say anything. The tears poured.
I should let it out, it’s time to let you go. Oh baby, I just wanna know. Where are you now? What have you found? Where is your heart when I’m not around? Where are you now? You gotta let me know, oh baby, so I can let you go.
Minerva slowly treaded back up to her office. She sat in the chair behind the desk. Albus’ portrait smiled at he.
“Minerva Mc Gonagall, I’m surprised at you!” He said in mocking tone.
“Why?” Minerva snapped her head up. “Why should I have expected that? You told me I could trust Severus!”
He smiled, “We all make mistakes my dear, but I was referring to my death. Minerva, dear, you always knew if I was going to go down I would go down fighting.”
Minerva shook her head fighting the tears back, “Albus, I can’t do this alone!”
“Yes you can my dear, you have proven you are a rather formidable woman.” Albus said smiling at her. She was becoming angered with his smile.
“ALBUS DUMBLEDORE! Quit that smile, you’re dead and I’m stuck here putting the pieces of my life back together!” Minerva screamed.
“Minerva you will be fine.” Dumbledore responded watching as the tears poured down her face. “Dear, please don’t cry. I’ll always be here to watch over you.”
“So that’s where you’ll be? What have you found there?” Minerva questioned still slightly hysterical.
“Peace, harmony. Minerva please it’ll be alright, I wish I could be there to give you a hug to reassure you.”
Minerva looked up with tears still falling, “But you can’t. You can never be here to do that for me again.”
“Minerva you know deep in your heart I loved you more than anything else. Just remember those nights and days we spent together, madly in love like teenagers.”
Minerva finally cracked a smiled, “I was a love struck teenager.”
“Oh I guess you were, love.” He said smiling back at her, “Minerva, just know I’m here for you when you need me.”
“Thank you, Albus.” Minerva said as she headed up to her room.
Where Are you now, what have you found, where is your heart when I’m not around. Where you now? You gotta let me know, oh baby, so I can let you go.
