This isn't really polished at all, it was something that came to me and was written in about an hour.
Rating: K+ I guess
A/N: This song has been running circles around my head all day, begging to be written. I’m sorry about the angst, but I’ve not had a wonderful day. I’ve got some fluff that’s next in line. Song belongs to Taylor Swift, and the characters you recognize are J. K. Rowling’s.
Invisible
Minerva sighed as she entered the Great Hall. That woman was here again. The one with the glossy chestnut colored hair, the pretty gray eyes, and the phony smile that everyone but Minerva fell for. She sat at Albus’ right hand, in Minerva’s chair, apparently telling a story, as Albus was watching her intently and didn’t even notice Minerva arrive at the table. Taking a chair next to Pomona Sprout, she tried not to let the woman’s presence bother her. Her name was Emily and she had been at dinner at least twice per week for the past three weeks. Albus had met her at a conference and been completely captivated by her. Emily however, didn’t give a damn about him as a person, and Minerva was the only one who seemed to realize it.
She can't see the way your eyes
Light up when you smile
She'll never notice how you stop and stare
Whenever she walks by
And you can't see me wantin' you the way you want her
But you are everything to me
Minerva pushed her food around her plate; Emily’s high pitched giggle made her nauseous. It infuriated Minerva how enamored he was with this fame seeking witch. She didn’t know a thing about him. She didn’t know that his favorite book was Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray or that he cried just as hard as Minerva did every time she made him watch Dr. Zhivago with her. She didn’t know that his favorite candies were actually Warheads but they were next to impossible to come by and Sherbet Lemons were the next best thing. She didn’t know him like Minerva did.
And I just wanna show you
She don't even know you
She's never gonna love you like I want to
You just see right through me but if you only knew me
We could be a beautiful, miracle, unbelievable
Instead of just invisible
As the weeks went by, Emily spent more and more time at the castle, and Minerva spent less and less time with Albus. Their twice weekly chess games had become bi-weekly at best, and even then Emily was always there, whining about being bored, and how Albus should teach her to play. When they did get a rare moment alone together, conversation was strained, as though they had run out of things to say to one another. Minerva so desperately wanted to talk to him, make him see sense, but she couldn’t bring herself to destroy the happiness he thought he’d found. And so she stood by, and watched as a great man was dragged down.
There's a fire inside of you
That can't help much I'm through
She's never gonna see the light
No matter what you do
And all I think about is how to make you think of me
And everything that we could be
At the New Year’s party that year, Emily announced their engagement. Albus stood silently by her side, letting her do all the talking. Minerva heard the murmurs among the male staff about how he’d been beaten, trained to follow like a dog, and Minerva felt inclined to agree with them. What had happened to her Albus? The independent one, the vibrant personality that lit up a whole room? As Minerva took another sip of her champagne, she reminded herself that he wasn’t her Albus. He was Emily’s, more and more every day.
Like shadows in a faded light
Oh we're invisible
I just wanna look in your eyes
And make you realize
As the wedding drew nearer, Minerva began to avoid Albus since Emily was almost always with him. At last, Albus noticed that Minerva hadn’t been around and he sought her out, wanting to know what was wrong. She told him it was nothing, but he knew her better than that. She’d cracked under his concerned gaze, and the questions came tumbling out. What did he see in Emily? Didn’t he know that she only wanted her fifteen minutes of fame? Why didn’t he have time for anyone else? She had cried, and he’d held her tightly, apologizing for neglecting her, promising to be a better friend and spend more time with her than he had been. Minerva didn’t know which was worse, seeing him, or not seeing him.
I just wanna show you
She don't even know you
Baby let me love you let me want you
You just see right through me
But if you only knew me
We could be a beautiful, miracle, unbelievable
Instead of just invisible
June 21st had been the day that Emily picked to get married; the longest day of the year, and to Minerva it felt like a lifetime. She got ready in her chambers, not with the rest of the bridesmaids, slipping on the cornflower blue dress that she realized was the exact shade of Albus’ eyes, and trying to hold back the tears. She was certain that Emily had no idea it was the same color. She had just finished fixing her hair, when it was time to go. Coming down the aisle, she locked eyes with Albus as he stood waiting in his midnight blue dress robes, willing him, pleading with him to get out now, while he still could. He sent her a soft smile as she took her place next to the other bridesmaids.
