Ok, I am also going to take this space to thank the ladies that put this site up! I love AD/MM, and am sooo glad this is now out on the web. My friends think I'm crazy for thinking there is something going on between these two, and I think their reading comprehension is poor. Ok...here goes
To Take A Chance
It was the summer before the school term in 1970, and the Headmaster of Hogwarts, Albus Dumbledore, was sitting on his sitting room sofa in a heated embrace with the school’s Deputy Headmistress, Minerva McGonagall. They had been heavily snogging for quite some time before Albus pulled back abruptly, and stood up to pace the floor.
“Albus, what is wrong?”
“ Minerva, I can’t.”
“You can’t what?”
“I can’t do this. We can’t do this.”
“Albus, I don’t understand,” she replied shaking her head and hoping the tears in her eyes would not fall down her cheeks.
“There can’t be an “us” Minerva, I’m sorry but it is for your own good.” Saying those words were the hardest he had ever had to say, because he wanted Minerva. Gods, he loved her so much but that is why he was doing this he rationalized to himself.
Minerva was angry now. Who the hell did he think he was telling her what was and was not good for her? “You arrogant bastard! How dare you assume you know what is and is not good for me. I’m not a child, Albus Dumbledore, and I refuse to be treated like one. I don’t understand you! One moment you hold me at arm’s length, and the next we are snogging in your sitting room. And don’t tell me there wasn’t something there. There was, Albus, I felt it and so did you.”
“Minerva, please, don’t press this any further.”
“Oh I’m going to press it further Albus, and you damn well better comply. Don’t press further, Albus you are potentially ruining my happiness and you ask that I not know your reasons???”
Albus Dumbledore’s heart held a grieve and a fear so strong it weighed him down. It was as if his heart was the weight keeping him under water awaiting death, but not the simple stopping of his heart. Oh no it was a death much worse, it was a death of the soul. He had been down this road before with a woman he loved only half as much as he did Minerva, and it had resulted in her and his unborn child’s murders. He couldn’t bear to see Minerva hurt in any way, and yet his heart was, also, aching for another reason. He knew if he let her go it would never be the same, and that was equally as painful.
Minerva watched Albus intently as all those thoughts ran through his mind, and she noticed his sagging shoulders, the tears and the utter despair in his eyes. Her anger had subsided, what had happened to this man she thought.
“Minerva...” but before he could continue he fell beside the chair he had been leaning against.
Quickly rushing to his side Minerva brushed the hair out of his face, and surveyed him before saying, “Albus, what happened? I want to know. I care about you too much, and I hate seeing you suffer like this. I want to help.”
When he looked at her Minerva almost cried. This wasn’t her Albus, this was a man who was close to being broken and she had to help.
“Albus-“
“Minerva I can’t start something because I can’t lose you.”
“Darling, that doesn’t make any sense. Please help me to understand,” she spoke softly.
“I’ve made many enemies, Minerva, and quite a few would stoop to hurting the person I love the most to get to me. If I let you go I lose you in a way I don’t want to, but you would be alive.”
“Albus our relationship could be a secret. I don’t need to be married, or for the whole world to know I’m with you. Don’t go getting all futuristic on me now, you don’t know what the future holds, and I’m willing to take a chance.”
“Minerva, the past is the best indicator for the future.” She still didn’t understand and was about to speak again but he beat her to it.
“I never told you, in fact few now would know, but I was married once.”
“That’s not surprising, Albus, you’ve lived a long life.” Minerva noticed that Albus seemed to be staring off into space and she wasn’t sure he had heard her.
“I loved her, not like I love you, but I did love her. It was our sixth year of marriage and Natalie was with child, five months along I believe, when it happened. I came home one day to find the house a mess and my wife was nowhere to be seen. Instead I found a note lying on the kitchen table. It was from one of Grindelwald’s followers, this was in the beginning days of his terror, and they had taken Natalie. I tracked them for at least a week, and when I found them they had already,” he was faltering now heavy tears streaming down his face, and Minerva took hold of his hand. “They had tortured and killed her, and the child had been removed from her womb. I never found it. She was a muggle, Minerva, she had no magical powers the only reason she was taken was because she was married to me. I can’t let that happen to you, I just can’t.”
Minerva was holding him now, but she wasn’t about to let this wonderful man go without a fight. However she never dreamed the biggest fight would be against him.
“My darling, there are no words that can take away your pain. Find the comfort and solace you need in my arms Albus. I love you too, dear. Let me be your comfort Albus, let me be the person that you can turn to when everything else is too much, let me be the person that can kiss all your fears and pain away, let me love you not from afar but from within your own heart. Your and Natalie’s fate does not have to be ours.”
“But there is the chance-“
“I know there is a chance, Albus, but there is a chance it will rain tomorrow, there is a chance that I will get struck my lighting tomorrow, there is a chance for everything. But you cannot let a mere chance dictate your decisions now, and Albus I mean this as no slant to Natalie but, darling, I’m a witch. I have powers that I can fight back with if something should happen.”
“I know, and you are very powerful my dear, but you are not immortal. I just, I love you so much.”
“Tell me about Natalie, Albus.” This was not what he was expecting, and he lifted his head to look at her for a second before placing it back on her chest. “She was two years younger than I was, and we sort of grew up together. She knew I was a wizard, and she was ok with that and even hoped our child would have magical ability. She was shorter than you by at least three inches, red hair, and vibrant green eyes not unlike your own. She taught at the local muggle school only a few miles from home. You share similar characteristics: loyalty, courage, caring, and stubbornness. There was just something lacking, and I never really realized that until I met you. I cannot necessary tell you what it was she lacked that you have, and I guess as close as I can get is that although I felt comfortable with Natalie there was still a rift between us. It was small and not easily recognized. In fact I never saw it until I met you. You see Minerva with you I always feel completely at ease, you know me better than anyone, and there are so many times when I know you can read my mind. Natalie was my wife, but you are also my best friend and she wasn’t.”
“Do you have any idea that you just made me fall in love with you all over again? I don’t want you to forget the love you had for her, Albus, bring it into this relationship for it is part of who you are and I want the whole package.”
“Now there is no way I can say no to you.”
“Ah-ha! I knew my plan would work. I am just too cunning for my own good,” Minerva laughingly replied trying to lighten the mood.
“You are indeed my dear. Are you sure you can live with the lying, the hiding, and the sneaking Minerva? I want you to be happy.”
“You are my happiness, Albus, if I don’t have you I don’t have anything.”
“You have me, my love, in every way.”
“And you have me. Now come you are in no condition to sleep alone tonight and since it is the summer we shall be safe.”
Ok, I want honest opinions here if you would be so kind. Does anyone see a possible sequel or should I just leave it at this? I cannot decide.
OH! And Thank you soooooooooo much to those that have reviewed my other stories. I appreciate it very much. ;D
