Chapter 15
Two weeks had passed since that fateful night at the McGonagall mansion.
Their summer cottage in Cornwell was up for sale and they had found two charming houses one in the deserted highlands of Scotland and the other in a little village in-between Birmingham and Coventry both of which had none of ghostly memories attacking either Albus or Minerva as they walked into certain rooms. Albus had seemed to come to grips with his demons yet Minerva was having more difficulty. A question kept plaguing her mind, why? It was hard to let go Alastor had been one of her best and most trusted friend’s since she was a child it was so hard to believe he would betray her and her husband in such a way. And so while her husband was away on a mission for the order she found herself standing alone outside the Moody cottage. The last weeks had been hard on Minerva and Albus’ relationship and finally both had managed the physical intimacy of a kiss but Minerva would never be able to let her husband make love to her if she didn’t sort this out once and for all. With that thought in mind Minerva bravely marched to the front door her knuckles rasped against the heavy wood and she waited wondering if she was doing the right thing.
“Albus not with you?” She heard the gruff voice of her once childhood friend ask. She shook her head in a simple no and listened as the many bolts on the other side of the door where undone.
“He’s on order business.” Minerva spoke avoiding Alastor’s eye as she entered the house. She turned to face Alastor when she entered the run down living room as gaped and stumbled backwards when she found him pressed up against her invading her personal space.
“What are you doing here Minerva?” He asked gruffly as he collapsed onto the sofa and took a swig from that notorious bottle.
“I want to know why Alastor!” Minerva demanded glaring at the traitorous man in front of her.
“You won’t like it.” Alastor answered as he stood up and glanced out of the newly cleaned window.
“I was brewing Polyjuice potion for the order, I gave Albus the amount he wanted but there was some left I bottled it up thinking it would come in handy. Poppy came round later in the day she cleaned the house and together we drank away our troubles. Poor girl tried her very best to seduce me but all I could think of was you. I had a beautiful woman throwing herself at my feet and mercy yet all I could think of was the way you looked at Albus at the order meeting that day. I’ve known for a long time I had feelings for you, I’ve spent years trying to hide it afraid of ruining our friendship thinking in time those feelings would die. But they didn’t in fact they grew and I found myself wishing you would look at me as you did Albus. The Polyjuice potion was just sitting there when I went to bed; I knew Albus was on a mission it just… just seemed like a good idea at
the time.”
He turned to face Minerva who had obviously taken a seat when listening to his tale.
“Do you regret what you’ve done Alastor, tell me you regret doing such a
thing!” Minerva snapped.
“Yes and no,” Alastor answered mysteriously. “I regret losing yours and Albus’s friendship and trust, but I don’t regret what I saw I don’t regret making that image of you. It’s an image that still stay in my mind always
Minerva.” He watched as Minerva stared at him in horror.
“Then you can never have my friendship Alastor.”
“I know, I knew that from the moment I stepped inside your bedroom.” He watched as she stood and made her way to the door she stopped just when she was about to leave.
“I came here, hoping you would regret your actions hoping you would be sorry and that somehow we could forge a friendship again I came here hoping to
sort things out.” She spoke crestfallen.
“And you have Min. We can’t be friends and I can’t accept your forgiveness.
Being friends would only make things worse go home to your husband and forget me. I couldn’t bare just being friend’s with you after all that has happened better not seeing you at all.” And so Minerva left her eyes streaming with tears as she closed the door on her childhood friend and returned to her husband. And Alastor allowed himself to shed the tears he had been hiding for years as he was left alone painfully replaying the memory of that one night over and over.
Minerva returned to the McGonagall mansion to find her husband waiting. He quickly enfolded her in his arms and comforted her as she sobbed he could only guess what had happened but he did know that thankfully everything would begin to sort its self out. There were many trials and dark times lying ahead of the couple but together they would face them one by one and eventually their bruised hearts would slowly begin to mend.
