I feel a RIOT forming!!! hehe We don't wanna make JK mad, though. If she gets mad, she won't get MMAD! I love this pun. lol. and I dont mean to put anyone in a worse mood, but I dont think that she ment anything by the ... I think she was just thinking of all the ships out there and was kinda sick of it or something. She has to get a lot of questions about all different kinds of ships. But I still hold on the the ship we have. "Ill never let go"

I can't really believe it...I've always thought JK was a shipper, too! However,I don't hate her,I agree she can have her opinion and as some people think there's something between improbable characters like Molly/Remus or other crazy couples, she can think they're not meant to be....still we're MMAD about those two lovely people and anything could stop us from shipping them. BTW,where can I find the whole interview?

That to me gives the impression JK only cared about the two "trio" ships, and sod all the other characters. I believe Maggie Smith.Hell, she PLAYS Minerva for God's sake, and she can see it! *props ship up with lifeboat*

*patches ship* Mhm. Being me I overslept and missed the live interview, and I immediately came on here to see what happened. Suffice to say I was very pissed off, but as of now I'm ignoring it. JKR said what? lol

I can't get it out of my head. I got all excited when I saw that a MMAD question had finally gotten through [and nearly fell out of my chair, lol]. But then she gave that horrible clipped answer and I got really depressed.
Thank god for this board, though, it makes everything better. ^_^!

OMG yes! I just went through the seven stages of grief in, like, five seconds. Whoot. See, look! Is that a word-for-word transcript? Because it seems to me like that's not like her. She usually goes into these long, involved explanations of everything. Damn it all. This is why we let sleeping dogs lie. We weren't decanonerized, so why were we not happy? I though she was in love... *weeping ala Miss Piggy* I'd really have liked an explanation of what she though their relationship was like. Cuz, I saw some romantic undertones meself. Not a lot, but some. And you know what? This isn't Remus/Snape-esque "I think character A and character B are hot let's make them have rabid monkey sex" ship. Lots of people see it. Almost EVERYONE sees it. I saw it when I was like, seven or something. Whatever. I'm used to shipping things that aren't canon. I'm just gonna keep shipping Dumbledore/Grindelwald, and nobody can tell me "no," cause there's no way anyone's addressing it. Since it's, ya know, basically only me. Ha. You know what? I don't actually care. Ha. And this is still the most shitty birthday present ever.

*Curls up and dies*
I only just found out. I think my heart is broken. Why? Why why why why why why why?
Anyone know where I can find the actual transcript? I'd like to read some other questions too.
I feel really sick, and empty.
I don't hate JKR, they are, afterall, her characters. But I will sink with my ship. I think I already have. Ouch.

Unfortunately, it is a word-for-word transcript. [That's why everyone's going nuts over the ellipsis.]
I definately saw romantic undertones too.
And it's more canon than Draco/Harry or twincest or whatever. She can't complain about us, there are a lot worse things out there.
Dumbledore/Grindelwald? I couldn't write it, but I can see it.

I agree,I'd love to know what she intended their relationship to come across as. I once started an ADMM shipping topic on another forum and everyone who replied was like "Everyone knows they've been together forever!" I'm talking people who aren't even particular fans of either of them here,so even unfans can see it,making almost the entire HP fan population deluded. Somebody should point that out.

That's the kinda thing I'm talking about. This one time, at band camp (okay, so it wasn't band camp, but I've always wanted to say that) I was hanging out with a couple friends and we got onto the subject of Harry Potter (not that we were ever off it.) And then, of course, I brought the conversation around to Dumbledore, since, you know, he's pretty much the sexiest thing ever., and I bring the conversation around to him whenever I get the chance. Seriously. ;D And I asked if they thought he'd ever been in love. And they were like, "I always thought he and McGonagall had something going on. " And then, they talked about all the shipper scenes in the history of ever. So obviously, we are not totally nuts.

Yeah, I've talked with some non-MMAD shipper friends about HP too, and I was talking about the possiblity of romances between the Hogwarts professors, and one of my friends said, "Oh yeah. I've always thought McGonagall and Dumbledore were a couple," and some other people agreed. I was so happy. haha. Soo.. Non-shippers can see it and JK can't?!

I have to say that if she wasn't trying to write ADMM as canon, she made a really poor job of it seeing as pretty much every Harry Potter fan can see the potential between the two.
I noted that someone earlier commented on it being a subconcious thing and i'm starting to agree with that, if she wasn't intending to purposely write them as canon, it must have been a sub-concious act cause with all due respect there are a lot of bits in the book that scream ADMM....I think she's in denial...that or blind...or stupid....or all the above! ;-D
Seriously though, I don't think she quite grasps just how many people have got behind this ship!
Long Live Maggie Smith though....she understands!

well this actually came at a good moment, since I was building up to a breakdown all week. This just released the floodgate and I sobbed on the floor for twenty minutes(about other things as well...I shouldn't bottle things up). And then I had a brilliant idea. We know she came around to the idea of Luna/Neville, so what if we sent her a letter or something and gave her directions to some threads, particularly good stories etc. to show her? I mean, the whole married thing is kinda blown I guess, but perhaps if she could see where we were coming from, and that lots of people think its true, she might reconsider some things Just a thought...oh, and I'd volunteer ot draft a letter. I write pretty good argumentative essays and the like(working on fic writing, but this did nothign for my muse today) Oh and Maggie should just ge a thank you note for existing...but we could add the MMAD thing for good measure

Well I personally was rather put out by her use of an exclamation point after the first "no." ("No!") Adding insult to injury! As if the suggestion were entirely unreasonable! Really, she should reread Ch. 27 of OotP... Putting all kinds of implications out there, and then dashing the hopes and dreams of hundreds, thousands with such brutal finality is quite sadistic really! Well maybe not, but sure feels like it. Although to be perfectly honest, I never thought a Mr. and Mrs. Albus Dumbledore scenario would ever be canon, BUT I felt sure that she invisioned a lifelong bachelor and spinster who bury their real mutual affection underneath their devotion to their work, the students, and Hogwarts. What's that line from that other great Maggie Smith character Miss Jean Brodie? "We are accustomed, bachelor and spinster, to spend our Sundays together in sailing and walking the beaches and in the pursuit of music." That is to say, I never thought we would get confimation of a relationship, but I definitely thought McGonagall's intense devotion to Dumbledore (and that is without question canon) was much more than that of a deputy to her boss. (That just makes her sound like Nixon's loyal secretary Rose Mary Woods...Dammit, Minerva deserves more respect that that!) BUT MMAD will endure...in fanfic, in our hearts and minds, and in the heartfelt pain and loss that I'm sure Maggie Smith will bring to the big screen at the end of Half-Blood Prince over the death of Dumbledore. God bless Maggie Smith.

OMG. I haven't been on this board in about a year; what a welcome-back. Gee, thanks, JKR.
Well, at least we all know that she's deluded. I mean, when you look at that epilogue... just because Albus and Minerva didn't fit into JKR's big happy Weasley family, she saw fit to leave them bachelor and spinster respectively. Since I haven't given up Harry/Draco, I'm not giving up ADMM either. XD
"No truer word was ever spoken" =P ^ is that a quote? or a common turn of phrase.. or something? =3

I honestly think the exclamation and the ellipsis were just expressive of her half amusement/exasperation with ships in general. If I imagine that I was Jo, I could imagine getting a bit frazzled with ships. After one word in an interview, all the Harmony fans were 'RAWR vs Jo' - it must have been like being attacked by a swarm of bees. Imagine talking to people, and being constantly asked 'Were so-and-so together?' especially when the whole story is more about good vs evil than who's with who. I can't think that anybody ever asked her about Minerva and Albus before, and after writing DH and thinking "ah, I've settled all the shippiness now" it must have been alarming to be asked about yet another ship that she probably hadn't even consciously thought of before! Even the evidence of it - he will not stand singlehanded, etc - was probably written from the angle of demonstrating how inspirational DD was; romantic subplot probably didn't come into it (harsh, but I've thought it for a while). I would even interpret the exclamation and ellipsis to indicate amusement, especially if she hadn't considered it before.
And all us writers here - surely at some point you've written something and had it interpreted in a way you've never thought of? I know I have, tons of times, both in fanfiction and original stuff. ADMM (and I don't mean to be ruthless) probably simply never occurred to her. Her answer seems to me to be the quick answer of someone responding without really thinking about how a fan's interpretation could differ from her own! ADMM could have been very subconscious (especially the Kendra link, jeez).
Tbh it doesn't matter to me now whether she changes her mind and says it is canon, because they're together in our minds and .... well, tabbycat's quote is perfect!
Oh and Sir Francis Drake's Heir - are you another Dumble-fangirl? *fangirls together*

My heart hurts.
And I agree with Apocalypticat, her exclaimation mark and ellipses were probably just showing her despair over the shipping fandom which exists. But it still feels like she thinks we're the stupid ones. And why take it out on ADMM?!
How can she not see what we see? She wrote every single real ADMM moment, it's not a random ship with the first two characters that come to mind. It's real, it's obvious and there are obvious romantic moments, how did she miss them when she wrote them? I don't think I can bear this.

I've been offline since the book was publishd to avoid spoilers. And I'm STILL READING IT - yes, the last person in the world - as slowly as I can because this is the last time!! Probably the most difficult thing I've done, reading it slowly. So, I thought I'd just take a very quick look at what's going on here and... WHO CARES WHAT SHE SAYS? Personally, I wouldn't ask her, not knowing would be better. But as long as it isn't written in the book... JK may be the author but the characters have long been living their own lives haven't they? Naturally, I'm disappointed but even more determined a shipper than before! I'd sign your message to Maggie Smith any time, Anglophile. It's great!!!!

Maybe it would be a good idea to send her a letter or something - not sure she reads the mail she gets, though - explaining we are not the nuts who ship Cho/Dumbledore or some other totally random stuff and asking what her idea of their relationship was when, as you say, it was her who wrote all the shippy stuff.
