Time ceased to become important in Minerva’s conscious mind. Instead, she drifted along a river of images as if she hadn’t a care in the world. Some of Albus, some of her childhood, some even from Albus’ life before her. These were the images she held on to in the darkness of her mind as she glided easily between the present and her memories. But through it all, there was one constant, one thing that gave her peace and unwavering confidence in herself and the potion…Albus. If he was with her, she was safe and the darkness would turn to light soon enough.
It only seemed like a matter of seconds when Minerva felt a warm, soothing hand stroking her hair and occasionally brushing against her cheek or forehead, just as her mother had done when she was sick as a child. She could hear the soft tones of what seemed like several people talking nearby in hushed voices but even as she struggled to open her eyes, her mind and body seemed to resist. It was then that somewhere in the back of her mind, Minerva began to remember the recent events. As if she had unlocked some hidden door, her mind flooded with a deep concern and a pang of guilt which seemed to grow stronger when she saw an image of Albus in a memory from a short while ago. An odd sensation, like the sun peeking around a cloud, floated across her and she could sense Albus somewhere in the room.
“I think she’s waking,” he blurted out without any warning. Albus had abruptly halted his conversation with Harold and Nicholas when he sensed a sudden change in Minerva’s condition and he crossed the room in several long strides. Athena, who had been sitting by her daughter’s bedside looked towards Albus as if to question his statement and to point out that there had been no change at all. But, before she could rebuff his declaration, Minerva stirred slightly and her eyes began to flutter open.
“Al-bus,” Minerva moaned in a faint whisper.
“I’m here sweetheart and you’re alright,” he whispered close to her ear. His voice held an edge to it that Minerva easily associated with the feelings she had encountered before opening her eyes. She tried to grant him a smile, albeit a weak one, so that he wouldn’t worry so much. “Your parents are here as well, along with Nicholas and Pernelle. Just take your time and I’ll be here when you are ready to wake fully.” Minerva nodded her head as she felt Albus’ hand grip hers, his fingers locking with her much smaller ones, and then his soft lips as they brushed against the back of them. As she drifted back to sleep, Albus leaned up and kissed each of her eyelids and then her forehead before resting his head on her shoulder, offering up a silent word of thanks to any and every god which happened to be listening.
For the impatient gathering in the hospital wing, the touching scene was a relief, especially for Minerva’s parents. Since Fawkes’ entrance into their home with a hurriedly scribbled note from Nicholas, Athena had been a bundle of nervous energy and mood swings. One moment she would sit quietly by Minerva’s side, speaking in hushed tones to her daughter and at other times voicing her strong opinions about the seriousness of what could have happened to all who would listen.
Nightfall was descending upon the castle and Armando Dippet has seen to it that Albus’ guests had rooms for as long as they needed and reluctantly Athena had agreed to retire for a bit. Pernelle, Harold, and Nicholas had gone to keep her company, leaving Albus alone by Minerva’s side, still waiting for her to open those sparkling green eyes and tell him exactly how she was feeling.
“I’m quite alright, Albus,” she spoke in answer to his silent thought. “I’m tired though.” Minerva’s eyes were open and alert, her face flushed slightly but to Albus she had never looked more beautiful.
“My lioness,” he whispered before kissing her softly on the lips, “I was beginning to think you would sleep all day and all night.” Minerva started to move around, shifting her weight so she could sit up properly when Albus climbed in the bed beside her, letting her rest comfortably in the security of his arms. “Tell me, are you truly alright? You gave me quite a fright.”
“I know.” She smiled when she saw the look on his face, his eyes widening at her statement. “You felt it too, didn’t you? I knew you were worried but then you knew I was going to be fine. That’s why you told me to go back to sleep earlier, isn’t it?” Minerva reached up and cradled his cheek in her hand, her thumb stroking his skin tenderly.
“I looked into your face and somehow I instinctively realized that you were merely tired. Apparently the overwhelming power of my thoughts combined with some of the emotions evoked with the memories was just too much for you. I never considered that the magical powers of one could affect the other so intensely.”
“I must say, though, that you certainly had some interesting memories for me to see,” she giggled. “I particularly liked the ones where we were together or you were thinking of me.” Albus’ face reddened as he recalled a similar set of thoughts from Minerva’s mind.
“We can discuss all of those at length another day. Right now, I think I need to let your parents know you’re awake. Athena’s been worried about you and Harold has been hovering over her like a hawk.”
“He’s probably overly concerned about her because of the baby. Mom said that when she was carrying me, he treated her like a delicate piece of china, ready to break at any minute.”
“Seems he’s falling back into a familiar pattern then because they actually sparred once today. I must say, I can see you get your fierce spirit from your mother,” he chuckled. “I think the phrase she used was something along the lines of …
don't you dare say you know exactly what I am going through until you carry this child. It wasn’t long after that incident that you stirred for the first time and the tension seemed to ease for all of us.”
“I’m sorry I gave everyone such a scare. I was so tired, though. That experience really pushed me to my limits.” Minerva settled deeper into Albus’ arms as she tried unsuccessfully to stifle a yawn.
“I’m going to step over here while the mediwitch checks you over once more and then I’m taking you to my rooms for a proper sleep. We can discuss all of this tomorrow, after your parents and the Flamel’s have had a chance to pester you in the fresh light of day.”
“You know Albus, I don’t regret a single thought. Everything you saw was straight from my heart and I love you.”
“Nor do I my love. You saw my memories untainted and felt my love unbridled. There is no one I love more than you.” Immediately, Albus’ felt a tug at his heart at having to be separated from Minerva so soon after her waking but in order to get her released from the hospital, it was necessary. “I’ll send a house elf to tell everyone that you’re awake and resting comfortably in my chambers and that they can see you tomorrow at breakfast.”
“Sounds like a good idea.” A burst of love and pride filled her heart as she watched him watching her. “But, Albus…” his eyebrows raised in a silent question, “tell them not to expect us up at the break of dawn. I’d like to spend a little quiet time with you before they invade us,” she winked. Albus returned her wink and took care of things while the healer inspected Minerva once more from head to toe.
It was well past nine when Minerva finally stirred from her long slumber, safely nestled in Albus’ arms and her head resting on his bare chest. The faintest whisper of his cologne clinging to his skin or the bedsheets tickled her senses as she slowly drew a long, deep breath into her lungs. “Mmmm, good morning,” she practically purred as she stretched in a feline sort of way.
“Yes it is a good morning…or what’s left of it. It’s nearly lunchtime,” he teased, “and your mother has already sent a house elf with a note inquiring about our breakfast plans. Seems she’s rather insistent upon seeing you for herself. Either that or she and your little unborn sibling are starving to death downstairs.”
A pair of smooth lips grazed across Albus’ chest as Minerva’s arm tightened around his waist. Her leg, which was draped comfortably across his, began to move across his seductively. “Don’t we have time to even celebrate our accomplishment properly?” she pouted as she worried his nipple to a hardened peak.
“Not if you want me to live to see our wedding day, my love.” He placed a finger beneath her chin and forced her to look up at him before he captured her lips in a passionate and unhurried kiss. “Besides, if we take the time now to assure your parents, Pernelle and even Nicholas about your health and well-being, we might be able to sneak away for a much longer celebration later.” The way his eyebrows wiggled and his eyes danced with a familiar fire caused her body to tingle in all the right places. She could practically feel the desire for her radiating from his pores, which only served to arouse her more.
“Then perhaps you’d care to join me in the shower before breakfast. I could use someone to wash my back for me and if you do a good job, I just might return the favor.” Albus was not about to let her playfulness go to waste as he chased her into the bathroom as they both burst into uproarious laughter.
As Minerva finished dressing for the day, Albus went to the McGonagall’s and the Flamel’s rooms to invite them to breakfast. Before he could even finish his sentence, Athena was already up and out the door, followed closely by Harold. Before much time has elapsed, they were all seated around a large table in Albus’ rooms, sharing a sumptuous feast.
“Before everyone asks…I’m fine. I wasn’t injured or sick yesterday, merely tired. That took a lot out of both of us and since his powers are much stronger than mine, I’m afraid I was a bit overwhelmed.” Minerva gripped Albus’ hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. “But, I’ve been checked by the mediwitch and Albus and they can both assure you that I’m in perfect health.”
A flurry of questions soon followed, ranging from the technical from Nicholas to the more personal from Pernelle and her mother about things she might have seen or felt. Minerva, in an attempt to preserve her most sacred thoughts and feelings for Albus, gave only enough information to quench their thirsts for answers.
“Enough talk about me! Let’s talk about my little brother or sister. How are things going with your pregnancy?” All eyes turned to Athena as she finished the remainder of her milk, only to have Harold fill her glass once more.
“If your father would stop trying to force feed me all the time and actually let me do a few things around the house, I’d be doing a lot better. He seems to think I am on my last leg or that the slightest activity will be the end of me.”
“That’s not true, Athena. You know I am only trying to help you. I can’t carry the child for us but I can make things as easy for you as possible.” Harold wasn’t normally a gruff man but his nerves had taken a beating over the last twenty-four hours and it was beginning to show.
“I know darling. Forgive me. We’ve all had a rough time of it lately and I honestly appreciate everything you’ve done.” Leaning over, Athena placed a quick kiss to Harold’s lips, causing the man to blush and cast his gaze towards the napkin folded neatly in his lap. “Minerva, your father has done the most amazing thing with the nursery. You and Albus have to come and see it soon. Nicholas and Pernelle have already agreed to drop by our home for a few days once we leave here.”
“That sounds like a wonderful idea. I’m sure we can make it over one weekend, Athena. After all, I would like to offer my assistance in any way possible to help get your home ready for the little one.” Albus’ blue eyes twinkled as he shoved a fresh strawberry into his mouth.
Minerva suddenly remembered one of the memories she had seen the day before and she felt the intense emotions surrounding the event. She could still hear Pernelle’s voice ringing in her ear as plainly as if the older woman were still speaking. A new kind of smile found its’ way to Minerva’s lips as she practically beamed with excitement. In her heart, she came to realize that one day she and Albus would get the opportunity to decorate their own nursery, create their own cradle, and in essence, create a new little life together.
“I know what you saw yesterday and it’s true. I do want to make babies with you, lots of them,” he whispered into her ear. His silky voice snapped Minerva from her thoughts as she leaned against him for a quick peck on the lips.
“What was that, Albus?” Nicholas teased. For a man his age, he still had exceptional hearing and while not eavesdropping, he had still heard every single word his friend had uttered.
“Nothing that would interest you, dear friend. I can promise you that.” A sly wink at the older man and the impish grin on Albus’ face left no room for further questioning.
“Maybe we should leave these two alone. Yesterday was very eventful, and I should know. I think I aged three years while watching over them and no doubt they have much to discuss.”
“But Nicholas…”
“No buts, Pernelle. You and Athena could dash into Hogsmeade and do some baby shopping while Harold and I play some chess or something around here. I think these two need some time without us…any of us!”
Albus and Minerva watched as two unhappy women were ushered from the rooms as they muttered under their breaths, though each secretly excited about a bit of shopping for the baby. Harold hugged his daughter tightly and once again thanked Albus for taking care of his little girl. Nicholas remained for a moment to give the two a piece of advice.
“If I were you two, I’d lock this door and charm it so that nobody can enter. Those two ladies won’t stay gone forever and no doubt they’ll want to show Minerva everything they bought and then some.” Laughter filled the room as the trio agreed on his prediction. “And if I were you, I’d take some time to discuss what you saw and ask any questions while they’re still fresh in your minds. There will be plenty of time for celebrating and documenting the results later, but for now, it’s important for both of you to understand exactly what you felt and witnessed, whatever that might have been.”
They each thanked Nicholas for his sound advice, Albus with a firm handshake and a hug and Minerva with a kiss to his cheek. As the door closed, a companionable silence reigned in the room as Albus wound his arms around Minerva and drew her to him.
“So, my dear…what memory would you like me to explain first?” Settling down on the purple settee in his living room, Albus pulled Minerva into his lap as his lips made contact with the side of her neck.
“Hmm, I saw so many things that it’s hard to pick a starting place. But I will say this…you made a handsome little boy…with your red hair and those blue eyes. Your mother was stunning and I now know where you inherited your red hair and you certainly have your father’s eyes.”
“Wonder what color hair and eyes our children will have?” he mused quietly. “I think I’d like them to have your long dark hair. It’s so soft and always shines.” His hand worked through her hair, letting the dark waves filter through his fingers as his words flowed through her mind. “I’d like a little girl, just like you, to dote upon. A little girl who would run to me at the sound of my voice…one whose blue eyes would twinkle with delight as I twirled her around in my arms.”
A single tear slid down Minerva’s cheek as she listened quietly to Albus’ waxing poetic about their future child. “And I’d like a little version of you, Albus. A strong red haired young man, ready to protect his sibling from any and all dangers in life. One who looks at his mother with love and adoration, even at his tender age. A little boy of my very own who will grow up to be loving, powerful, handsome, protective and just as much a little boy in his heart at the age of one hundred as he was at ten.”
The air crackled around the lovers as their lips brushed against each other. Once again, no words were needed, just the emotions thrumming through their veins. Tender touches, soft sighs and moans, warm breaths across newly revealed skin…all had a new meaning as they made love for the first time since joining their minds. Just when they thought they couldn’t possibly grow any closer, a rediscovered brand of magic intervened and showed them new levels of communication, love, and passion as the rest of the world melted away from all coherent thoughts.
