This came to me while reading “The Luck of the Draw” by Jaya so blame her. I wanted to write something for my husband, Alex for his birthday and to remind him that a woman in charge is an experience to remember. Karlie
One Special Night
Albus Dumbledore was a handsome man in every stance he took. Mirrors that gave him a view of his entire body surrounded him and he was pleased with his reflection. His hair was a gleaming shimmery mass of whiteness that contrasted smartly against his charcoal gray robes. The black piping that formed the trimming on his robes was silk and charmed to appear to travel around his robes at lightning speed. The effect was stunning.
He struck another pose and noticed he was standing tall with his conservative black boots hidden by the length of his robes. He turned his face from side to side. He had trimmed his beard and brushed it until it shone. There wasn’t anything he could do about the wrinkles lining his face unless he used a glamour charm and he was unwilling to do so. He was over a hundred and fifty and she knew it.
She was Minerva McGonagall and tonight they were going on a date. They had gone on many social functions together. Their duties as Headmaster and Deputy Headmistress of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry required them to appear at many gatherings. He gladly escorted Minerva to those events and she always happily accompanied him but he had often wished to ask her out for an evening of pleasure devoid of any professional obligations.
Amazingly, she had taken the choice from him and invited him to accompany her for a night of dancing. He hoped a night holding her in his arms would encourage a romantic interest on her part.
Albus had had his share of women inviting him out for an evening of pleasure after his defeat of Grindelwald. He had accepted a few in the beginning but had quickly tired of women that just wanted to be seen on his arm or having to endure an ill conceived plan to take him to bed with thoughts of a speedy, required marriage proposal.
He had thrown himself into his work and what regrets he had for leading a nearly monastic life for several years had been pushed into the deepest recesses of his mind. His appointment as Transfigurations professor and Deputy Headmaster had taken him away from the social life among the wizarding elite and he found his duties with the students so enjoyable he didn’t feel lonely.
Friendships formed among the staff took care of his need for companionship with adults most of the time and he had his summers free to pursue whatever caught his fancy.
When Minerva joined the staff he had become more interested in staff meetings and the required social obligations that school personnel had to attend. Yes, Minerva had certainly brightened his duties considerably. Their friendship grew into a fondness he hadn’t enjoyed in a while and wanted to explore it further but something always interfered. Either she was dating someone or he was involved with someone.
His appointment last year to Headmaster had made him pull on the brakes. He didn’t want Minerva to feel pressured into a relationship although if any woman could hold her own against Albus Dumbledore, it was she.
Satisfied with his appearance he left his dressing area and went into his bathroom. A few minutes passed while he scrubbed his teeth and brushed his eyebrows so the hairs went in the same direction. He took one final look of inspection before leaving his bathroom and heading to his sitting room. Minerva had suggested she pick him up so he paced for several minutes until he heard her soft knock.
The sight of Minerva standing in his doorway took his breath away. She was dressed in silver robes that would have made any Slytherin jealous. The robe moved like quicksilver against her body and her hair had been brushed until it shown. Her dark tresses flowed down her back in soft waves and he clenched his fist to prevent reaching forward to stroke it.
“Please come inside,” he stepped aside and allowed her to enter. “You look lovely, my dear.”
“Thank you, Albus. These are for you.” Minerva’s hands came from behind her back and she held out a bouquet of yellow daisies and a box of lemon sherbets. Her eyes sparkled as she watched his face break into a broader smile.
Albus’ heart began pounding as he reached for the gifts. He was so happy he had taken so much time with his appearance. This was no ordinary date. He summoned a vase and the flowers were placed inside and half-filled with water. Out of the corner of his eye he noticed Minerva arch her eyebrow as he arranged the flowers in a colorful array. Herbology had been a favorite subject of his during his Hogwarts days and he tried to cultivate a few flowers in the window box outside his summer flat.
“You are a man of many talents, Albus. I am impressed.” Minerva tilted her head and cast a critical eye over the flowers. “I wonder what else I’ve underestimated about you.”
This remark caused a blush to form on Albus’ cheek that his beard only partially covered. Was Minerva flirting with him? His mind raced as the possibilities ran through his mind. Relax, relax, relax he cautioned himself silently. She was a dear friend and there was no reason to be nervous.
“I’m sure I can think of one or two things.” He looked intently into her eyes as he spoke and the twinkle in them grew as a flush appeared on her face.
“Shall we go?” Minerva asked while holding out a strip of tartan ribbon. “I arranged a portkey.”
Albus looked puzzled for a moment and she enlightened him. “I rather no one noticed our coming and going. I doubt we’ll desire a chaperone.” The pull of the portkey removed them from Hogwarts and they landed in a small room filled with cloaks.
Albus landed with the grace of one used to portkey travel and automatically held out his hands to steady Minerva. She had also landed with catlike poise but Albus’ mind was still on her last remark. Was she implying a chaperone would hinder the activities she had planned? Anticipation rose within him and he allowed Minerva to pull him from the room.
