Well... you don't get "dame-d" just because you're a good actress, right? So i guess Jools probably got it more for her singing anyway. Plus she herself always saw herself first and foremost as a singer, not an actress. I have to agree that she did some really awsome things. I just love her performance in "Duet for One" or "Victor/Victoria", apart from "Mary Poppins" and SoM, apparently. *g* The point is that I think only a few people can compete with Maggie. I mean... even old Larry Olivier was just horrid compared to her, at least in Othello (but there has to be a reason why he didn't want to work with her anymore ). She's just some talent bomb dropped on England or something. And I believe that this whole thing isn't just about their quality as actresses, but more likely about who we prefer. And that's just a matter of opinion, dear. I like both of them, for different matters that is, so that's why I had a hard time to decide.

Nope! Absolutely NOT! I refuse to concede this point! Julie Andrews is NOT as good an actress as Maggie Smith by a LONG shot. And being made a Dame doesn't automatically mean you are any good. It just means you are popular. It is bestowed for services to British theatre/film/culture, so as long as you're famous and over 60, you're in. Frankly if anyone out there thinks Julie Andrews is representative of the UK PLEASE think again. Ugh. Twee, annoying, sugar-sweet, schmaltzy YUK YUK YUK. The thing I hate about her most is her hair - why when she looked so pretty in Mary Poppins, and like a boy in The Sound of Music, did she opt for the short do? And how much work has she had done on her face?! blech. I hope no one gets too upset by this! I'm just enjoying stirring up the worms! mugs.x

Well, as I said, her forte is more singing than acting... though she's done her share of acting, true. But have you seen more than SoM or MP with her? Cause that seems to be the only movies you refer to... just wondering. And yes, Mags does have a rare talent there, that's true. That's what always makes me wonder why people fuss so much over the Dench woman... I mean, Judi Dench, sorry. But that's another story. As for plastic surgery... I don't really care if she had any or not. Yes, I know that she did have something done but frankly... it's her decision and certainly not my place to judge her. And who said that she's representing Britain? I mean... she's lived in America for ages, as far as I know. And well... her choice, true. Wouldn't have moved away from London but well. *g* But she's still a British citizen, the queen gave her the title, and you can't change that anyway. So why raging about it. Oh, and she's always had short hair, MP was a wig, as always when she had long hair.

Judi's good and all, but in my opinion not great. Maggie, on the other hand, is GREAT! I dunno... (*often finds herself OT *)

Yeah, and then Maggie says stuff like "oh, I would love to be only half as talented as Judi". Uhm... yeah. Understatement of the century or something. ;D

I know! Exactly! I've read so many quotes of Maggie's like that and I'm like, "WHAT?!". lol Maggie overshadows Judi, IMO. Btw, has anyone ever seen Julie Andrews in "One Special Night"? They usually show it on Lifetime and LMN around Christmas. I really like that movie.

Yeah, me too, One Special Night and Victor/Victoria are my two favourite Julie movies, I think... though I love SoM and MP too, of course *sings* ;D. And true, I think that Maggie is the better actress of the two, too, but on the other hand... who can compete with Maggie acting-wise? I agree with the thing about "the Dench woman" (meant very lovably, of course ) btw... *shakes head* ;D. Love, Lies

Yeah, One Special Night is soooo cute. ;D Love that one. Hey, and Jools won an Oscar as well, so she can't be that bad an actress.

True, of course she isn't . Mags is just some kind of ubertalent. And hm, must watch OSN again at some point now .

*lol* I love that discussion .. *gg*
And One special night is one of my favourite Julie movies, too ... She's great in that one ! But then again, I love basically all of her movies ... And I love all of Maggie's movies, too ... *gg*

Post by Rikki on Jun 10, 2006 14:37:52 GMT -5
Yeah, see, that's what makes it so difficult. *g* Though there are some movies with both ladies which I'm not too fond of.

*lol* Well, I can't think of any movie with those two that I don't like ... I mean, of course there are those that I like better than others, but there isn't a single one I hate ...
True, it really is too difficult to decide .... *gg* I think one of the reasons I love both of them so much is that you can't really compare them ... They're just too different for that ... Two different persons ... ;D
|
|
|
Post by Rikki on Jun 10, 2006 16:38:54 GMT -5
Well, true, you can't compare them at all actually. *g*
Hm.. and movie-wise... I think S.O.B. and Ten aren't really my cup of tea with Jools. And California Suite and Gosford Park with Mags actually. Not that I hate those but well...
|
|
|
Post by Herzele on Jun 10, 2006 17:23:26 GMT -5
Hmm ...
I love Ten ! That movie's just hilarious ... And of Jools' best ( and one of my fav ) lines comes from that movie : "It'll cost you 10 bucks and an apology" ... ;D Unfortunately I haven't seen S.O.B yet, but I absolutely have to see that one some time !
California Suite ?? That's one of my fav Maggie movies ! But that might be cause I think she plays great together with Michael Caine ... And Gosford Park ... Well, it's not my fav movie, but I think Maggie's got a few great lines in it ... E.g. : "A snob ? Me ? I haven't a snobbish bone in my body" ... ;D

As for Duet for One, yeah, she died in the end. They just didn't show it properly. Ladies in Lavender... guess that's another of those movies I'm not too fond of. But not because of the movie but more like the whole plot. Don't know... especially Judi Dench's character got on my nerves, already while reading the short story though. *g* But if you're only gonna rent it, do so. There are a lot of people who really like it, so hey. ;D

I love Ladies In Lavender, it is one of my favorite movies. I don't think Judi's character is annoying in the slightest, what she is is utterly confused. Attempt to understand her and the movie should at least be ok in your eyes.
It makes you laugh and then it breaks your heart into a million pieces, plus the music is amazing.
I say at least give it a shot.

The only fact about the music that I don't like is the actor that tries to play the violin ... Daniel Brühl ... I'm not overly fond of him ... But the music really is beautiful !

Yeah, well, Daniel Brühl... guess he could have done the violin parts better but yeah... But i was really amazed by Maggie's German. Or her pronounciation, that is actually.
As for Judi's character... don't know but that whole "oh, why do you take it off your bank account *pissed*" thing... and then the "you snapped at me" was just... *rolls eyes*

Ursula responds in that way because she is experiencing a multitude of feelings she has never felt before and she doesn't know how to respond. It may be hard to imagine but she has never even had a crush, love in almost all forms she has never felt. Wash up Andre and she gets all these feelings: romantic, platonic, motherly. She doesn't know which, she doesn't know what it is. Further love may be the greatest emotion but it carries with it lots of negative emotions as well, i.e. Jealousy, envy, mistrust... That point is so early and Judi's character sees Andre as hers, her new toy, hence the line "I saw him first." It isn't supposed to make sense, and when she understands what it truely means she realizes all she's missed. That is what is so heartbreaking. I don't mean to attack anyone who disagrees, feel free to. I know so few who have seen it, and I love to discuss things. Christy
